Who Are The New Economy Entrepreneurs?

In this lens, meet the team known as New Economy Entrepreneurs, a group founded by Mary Lou Kayser and Christian James of Portland, Oregon for the purpose of empowering the next generation of business leaders. Using a blend of education, business, marketing, and technology principles, Mary Lou and Christian are dedicated to teaching people how to become successful entrepreneurs in the New Economy.

You will learn what makes the New Economy different from economies of the past; why during a recession is one of the best times to start a business; how you can make a decision about what business to do that fits your needs and desires best; and why teaming up with Christian and Mary Lou will benefit you!

What Exactly IS The New Economy, Anyway?

The New Economy has been brewing for several years, but it really didn't come to a full head until September 2008 when Wall Street collapsed, sending the world into a recession the likes of which had never been seen before. That one crisis made billions of people wake up to the reality of what has been a long time coming. A year later, we see that the world as we knew it will never be the same again, and smart business people are positioning themselves to take full advantage of this change as the New Economy begins to take off.

Now more than ever people everywhere are recognizing that in order to survive, let alone flourish, we MUST take back control of our financial lives and begin to PRODUCE more than we CONSUME. One of the best ways to do that is by starting a business, and becoming an entrepreneur. Indeed, broad-based entrepreneurialism is one of the cornerstones of the New Economy, and will continue to be for years to come. While Big Corporations will certainly exist, the New Economy will be remembered for the number of small businesses that emerged during a time of tremendous cultural and economic change.

Another significant element of the New Economy is the Internet. Never before in our history have we been able to touch lives around the globe as quickly and directly as we can today because of online opportunities. New Economy entrepreneurs rely heavily on the Internet for our businesses, and in many cases, operate solely through online channels. Learning to harness the Internet's power for solving problems gives entrepreneurs in today's economy access to markets we could only dream about in past generations.

A third segment of the New Economy involves an emphasis on quality over quantity. New Economy entrepreneurs can take advantage of the explosion of niches all around the globe, find one or two to cater to, and do very, very well serving those niches for years to come. A great business idea doesn't have to be complicated to do well; in fact, the simplest ideas based on duplication and systems will ultimately do the best. Because the Internet allows small business owners to use automated systems for many elements of our businesses, we can devote more time to the quality of customer relations, product and service development, etc.

The quality principle spills into personal time, as well. New Economy entrepreneurs will work very hard for our dreams, but not at the expense of our relationships and free time. Indeed, one of the benefits of New Economy entrepreneurialism is the collective recognition that life-work balance is essential for success. One does not have to be sacrificed for the other. In fact, we refuse to let our work own us!

Finally, the New Economy places a greater emphasis on cooperation rather than competition. Savvy New Economy entrepreneurs recognize that there is plenty to go around; we believe in abundance vs. scarcity and model that attitude in what we do each day. We scale our lives according to what we value most, knowing that if we follow our passion, work smarter not harder, good things will come for us and the world. Overall, the New Economy is a time of higher awareness on many levels, from work-life balance to the impact we have on the environment to owning our lives rather than being owned.

Why Right NOW Is The BEST Time to Start a Business!

Contrary to What Most People Think, A Recession Is a GREAT Time to Become an Entrepreneur!

It sounds crazy, starting a business during a recession. But let's think about this for a minute. Is it really crazy? Consider these facts. Did you know that more successful businesses were launched during the Great Depression than at any other time in our history? And from those businesses, more millionaires were created than at any other time in our history?

If a recession is such a bad time to start a business, then why were so many millionaires created out of the Great Depression? Maybe this is a clue that a recession is actually a great time to start a business?

One thing we know for sure: recessions never last. The entrepreneurs who position themselves for the next great expansion will capitalize on that growth because they are already in place and ready to go when people start spending again! According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, recessions last an average of 18-24 months. Expansions last an average of 5-6 years. As of the writing of this lens, the American economy has been in a recession for less than a year. That means in 6 to 12 months, expansion is set to begin. If you start a business today, you will be among those entrepreneurs poised and ready for the following 5-6 YEARS of economic expansion!

I don't know about you, but being in FRONT of an economic expansion is a far more appealing place for us to be than at the BACK of one!

So How Do You Decide Which Business Is Right for You?

Move Beyond Your Fear and Excuses and You Will Find a Business That Is Right for You!

Christian and I recently attended a seminar about how to launch a small business. One of the things we really liked about the facilitator was he did not sugar-coat anything about becoming an entrepreneur. Taking that approach here, we are going to give you the STRAIGHT HARD facts about starting a business. It may not always be warm and fuzzy, but if you are serious about taking advantage of the BEST time in our history to become an entrepreneur, you won't mind us being truthful.

First of all, there are PLENTY of terrific business opportunities out there. Honestly, there is absolutely no reason why someone who wants to become an entrepreneur today can't. The biggest obstacle to starting a business is always staring back at you when you look in the mirror each morning. That's the truth! Fear and doubt stop more people from doing anything different with their lives than anything else. And so many people wake up one day years later, look back at their lives, see all the things they didn't do, and wonder what they were so afraid of.

Are there risks in starting a business? Absolutely! But there are MORE risks in not starting one! That is why we encourage you to move past those fears and take action right now to find a business that excites you!

That said, once you have decided starting a business is what you want to do, you need to find an idea or an existing business that suits you. Indeed, there are two directions an entrepreneur can go:

1. Start a business from scratch with an original idea OR
2. Plug into an existing business model through Franchising, Direct Sales or Network Marketing

Each direction provides tremendous rewards; it's simply a matter of figuring out which one fits you better. I will go into more detail later about the specifics of these directions, but first...

You need to identify what you like to spend your time doing now, what your interests are. A great place to start is looking inside yourself and writing down what you love in life. Are you passionate about health? Helping people? Flowers? Animals? Children? Technology? Cars? Fashion? Food? The list of interests is endless, and taking the time to do this one simple exercise can do more for someone in helping them decide what business could work for them than just about anything else. (For anyone needing some extra guidance, check out the book recommendations from Amazon later on in this lens.)

The key is, if you choose something you are passionate about, your passion will get you out of bed each day no matter what else is happening. It will also attract like-minded people to you as customers and possible business partners. You will be excited about your business, and be able to work through the problems that inevitably arise for all entrepreneurs. It is worth the time to explore your options so that once you have found something you like, you can go for it full throttle!

Why Starting a Network Marketing Business Can Be Your Ticket to Economic Freedom

How Is It Possible that One of the Most Misunderstood Methods of Doing Business Has Created More Millionaires than Any Other Business Model?

In the previous module, we identified two ways an entrepreneur can choose to start a business: either start from scratch with an original idea (i.e. Pet Rock) or plug into an existing system like a franchise (i.e. Subway) or a network marketing company (i.e. Univera). Choosing a business should be approached the same way you would choose a life partner: do your due diligence, but also listen to your instincts. We often know right away if someone or some business is the right fit for us.

Because our business experience to date falls into the network marketing realm, that is what we are going to address in this module. Having discovered network marketing more than 6 years ago, we now appreciate it as one of the finest ways of doing business anywhere on the planet. Why do we say this? Because when done right, it is a phenomenal vehicle for getting average people to their life-long destinations. It is also a proven system of doing business -- and that is a key ingredient in the decision-making process any would-be entrepreneur MUST consider. Think about it: trying to become an entrepreneur with an unproven idea or system is extremely difficult and fraught with much pain and disappointment, not to mention a higher than average failure rate. Tapping into a model or system of doing business that has a proven track record is a much better choice.

For example, we know that real estate investing works, because thousands of people have successfully invested in real estate and gotten positive returns. We know that franchising works, because millions of people have purchased franchises and made them pay. We also know that network marketing works, because for more than 60 years, average people around the world have followed a proven system with an established company and become financially free for life.

What makes network marketing so attractive is you are buying into an existing, proven system when you find a company that matches your interests, values, and goals. Remember, the system of network marketing works -- it's the people that use the system that sometimes fail. If you are serious about starting a business during the New Economy, network marketing is definitely one of the avenues you need to explore.
