New Family Organization

While the Middle East's only democracy protects freedom of religion for all faiths; no citizen in Israel has the right to freedom from religion. Israel is the only democracy in the world that denies its citizens the right to marry if they do not conform to orthodox religious standards. The absence of separation of religion and state, civil marriage, interfaith marriage, and civil liberties for family life outside of religion means that the 42 % of family units which fall outside the de facto recognized definition of family in Israel, a man and a woman of the same religion married according to orthodox religious rituals, are subject to discrimination in terms of recognition, rights and benefits.

Irit Rosenblum, New Family's Founder and Executive Director

Advocate Irit Rosenblum broke new ground by pioneering a new sphere of human and civil rights surrounding the family. In two decades of outspoken human rights work, Irit Rosenblum distinguished herself as the leader of a legal revolution in family in Israel. She created New Family in 1998 to promote the concept that family rights are human rights and to work for legal equality for all families in Israel.

What is New Family Organization?

New Family's StampSince 1998, New Family has distinguished itself as the leading family rights organization in Israel. New Family fills an important gap in the theory and practice of human rights, by ensuring all residents of Israel equal family rights; including the rights to marry, divorce, have children, register spouses and children, and conduct family life regardless of religion, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, or status. Today, New Family works to democratize Israeli law through a combined strategy that includes disseminating information, providing legal consultation and aid, conducting legislation and policy advocacy, litigation, research and data analysis, outreach, and public visibility measures. For the 2 million people in Israel who are subject to discrimination on the basis of family status, New Family's achievements for human rights have been invaluable.
