Newfie with respect (Polite Attitude)

The term Newfie has been and will continue to be controversial. The term Newf, as well, is controversial. The purpose of this Squidoo is to find out how people feel about being referred to as Newfies or Newfs and to put a respectful spin on the terms. Personally, I am not not ashamed to be called a Newfie or a Newf. Are you?

I am a Newfoundlander and I like to think that I have a sense of humour and I have been called, Newfie and a Newf and I have been asked if I were offended. In all situations the digs were not meant to ridicule but were complimentary.

To be truthful, I haven't been offended because I am proud of who I am and proud to be known as a hard working, honest, trusting and truthful Newfoundlander, Newfie or Newf who respects others. By the way, I can laugh at myself. It's refreshing, however; not in a condescending way.

Yes, there are those who, because of their ignorance, or because some of us have given them reason to, believe that we are all one big joke.

Let's encourage fellow Newfoundlanders and non-newfoundlanders to put a respecful spin on newfie and newf. "Let's take the handle from inside the cup." We can still laugh at ourselves and at others but let's do it with respect.

The Newfoundland Flag

The Newfoundland Flag. The blue colour represents the sea, the white colour represents snow and ice, the red colour represents the effort and struggle of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and the gold colour symbolizes the confidence Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have in themselves and for the future.

The blue triangles are meant as a tribute to the Union Flag, and stand for the British heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. The two red triangles are meant to represent the two areas of the province - the mainland and the island. The gold arrow, according to Pratt, points towards a "brighter future"; the arrow becomes a sword, honouring the sacrifices of Newfoundlanders in military service when the flag is draped as a vertical banner.
