Launching A New Product - Innovation & Marketing

This is my guide to how to launch a new product successfully.

Management guru Peter Drucker said the two main value adding activities of a business are marketing and innovation. Everything else is a cost.

Innovation and marketing are uniquely combined together when launching a new product and this page is intended to explain how you can launch your new product much more successully.

Latest News On Jeff Walker's Product Launch Formula

The leading product launch methodologies for launching products using Internet marketing have been developed by Jeff Walker and sold through a program called the Product Launch Formula.

Jeff Walker re-launched his Product Launch Formula coaching starting April 6th 2009 or launch on April 15th.

It sold out quickly and it is not yet clear when it will be available next so if you are interested, sign up to his email list below. I have a very comprehensive page on the Product Launch Formula

Jeff Walker is acknowledged as the master for launching products using the power of Internet marketing.

The product itself can be information or a tangible product or service but the "buzz" is created through the power of the Internet, videos, social networking and emails.

Take this option to sign up and make sure you don't miss the opportunity to learn from the master.

In October 2009, Jeff Walker announced that he is teaching people how to become self employed product launch managers.

Reasons For Launching A New Product or Service

The first reason for launching a new product is because your business is new.

Even if you are entering an established market where there is clear demand, you still have to get your brand established and that can be quite a challenge when you are competing with businesses with many more resources for sales promotion and marketing who already have huge lists of happy customers.

The second reason for launching a new product is when your business is established and already successful but you want to extend the scope of your products and services.

This can take two forms:

1. The launch of a new product which is relevant to your existing customers. Provided your customers trust you and your new product is good, this should be the easiest of the alternatives.

2. The launch of a new product to new customers. This form of diversification is risky but can be hugely profitable when successful.

The third reason for launching a new product is TINA - There Is No Alternative. Your existing market is declining rapidly as customers prefer new alternatives. Think horse drawn carriages v cars, think typewriters v word processors.

In this last case the stakes are high. If you don't do anything, you won't have a company. If you do something badly and the new product fails, you won't have a company and you have accelerated the decline of your business. Every day you delay, you have fewer resources (if you are already losing money) and you give your competitors another day to become more established in the new market.

Wow this is a high pressure launch.

Ten Common Mistakes When Launching A New Product

According to the Harvard Business Review in 2004, only 1 in 10 new product launches are considered to be successful.

Here are some mistakes to avoid when launching your new product or service and what to do to prevent these mistakes happening to you.
  1. Not planning the whole process effectively. There is a lot to communicate and a product launch needs to be treated as a formal project with effective project management.
    ...
  2. Not defining the target market. If you are unclear who will buy your product, what their needs are and their frustrations with the current "solutions" the rest of your marketing will miss the target.
    ...
  3. Not creating a clear, well define value proposition. If you can't explain why your new product is special and why customers should buy it in preference to established, proven solutions, your product launch will fail.
    ...
  4. Failing to adequately test your new product. You do not want early buyers of your product to become disenchanted by selling a product that doesn't work. You need these people to become raving fans so test, test and then test some more.
    ...
  5. Launching too soon. If you product is not up to standard or your launch is poor designed, don't waste your time and money. Delay and do it properly.
    ...
  6. Having an inflexible launch plan. It can be dangerous to set a fixed date for your launch unless you start early, plan well and execute the plan professionally.
    ...
  7. Failing to generate leads. You must succeed in getting people interested in your new product launch and take them through a sales funnel which develops their enthusiasm.
    ...
  8. Overestimating your results and spending money you don't have. Advertising is expensive so look to use variable cost advertising based on leads and preferably sales wherever possible.
    ...
  9. Failing to gather testimonials. Your product launch needs to maintain momentum so you must make sure that you capture social proof (evidence that other people love it). Some people will but because it is new and they are predisposed to buying anything new. Most people buy because something works and does what it claims to do.
    ...
  10. Overestimating the life of your new product. Product life cycles are getting shorter so you have little time to rest on your laurels. Don't become complacent while your competitors work on developing an even better new product.
    ...

Product Launch Formula

Jeff Walker is the creator of the Product Launch Formula.

This is the technique used by many of the biggest Internet marketers and has been responsible for seven or even eight figure launches.

But it would be a mistake to think that the Product Launch Formula is just for the Internet millionaires. It is also used by real people introducing real world products and services.

Released in March 2008 and twice since then, it is not clear when it will be available next.
Product Launch Formula
As I write this on February 29, 2008, this is a unique time because Jeff Walker, creator of Product Launch Formula started the pre-launch of his new, improved Product Launch Formula 2.0.

Can you imagine a better way to learn than to watch the master launch his new product?

If you come to the game late don't worry. I have created another Squidoo page to track what happens with Jeff's launch.

Is Your New Product A Winner Or Loser?

A new product launch is complex and for anyone it represents a bit of a gamble.

When the best advice from the best copywriters in the world is to test, test the headline, test the offer, test the guarantee, test the list... you cannot take anything for granted.

A successful product launch requires commitment, hard work and picking up ideas from other successful launches.

Just one idea could make all the difference and take you past the tipping point.
