Since ancient times, Silver has been prized for jewelry making. Early records indicate that the Chaldeans were the first to process silver ore in 2,500 BC. The first major source of mined silver is thought to be Anatolia, which is now modern Turkey. These mines supplied silver to craftsmen thoughout Asia Minor, including the Near East, Crete, and Greece. As various civilizations took their places in history, silver production moved to Greece, then Spain, then to Continental Europe.

After the discovery of the New World, Bolivia, Peru, and Mexico became valuable sources for silver. From 1500 through 1800 they produced and traded over 85% of world production.

After 1875, discoveries in Nevada, Colorado, and Utah provided significant new sources for silver. Improved techniques in the mining and refining of silver during the 20th century has resulted in increased worldwide production. These advances were critical, as much of the high-grade ore had been depleted by the end of the 19th century.
