2009 New York Mets
Ranked #54,114 in Sports & Recreation, #1,182,727 overall
The New York Mets are the national league baseball team in New York. All though the lineup and roster of the players are always changing due to injuries, trades, ect., as of April of 2009, the active roster of the team goes as follows:
Pitchers:
25 Pedro Feliciano
50 Sean Green
61 Livan Hernandez
33 John Maine
39 Bobby Parnell
34 Mike Pelfrey
46 Oliver Perez
22 J.J. Putz
75 Francisco Rodriguez
57 Johan Santana
43 Brian Stokes
36 Ken Takahashi
Catchers:
11 Ramon Castro
9 Omir Santos
Infielders:
1 Luis Castillo
3 Alex Cora
21 Carlos Delgado
7 Jose Reyes
5 David Wright
Outfielders:
15 Carlos Beltran
19 Ryan Church
28 Daniel Murphy
18 Jeremy Reed
10 Gary Sheffield
17 Fernando Tatis
Right now, the starting rotation is Johan Santana, John Maine, Oliver Perez and Mike Pelfrey and Livan Hernandez. There was a lot of "drama" during spring training over who was going to be picked for the 5th starter. Redding, Garcia, Hernandez, Martinez and Niese were all fighting for the fifth starter position but the spot was finally given to Livan Hernandez when the last standing, John Maine was sent down to the AAA, Bisons. Niese has started for the Mets three times at the end of last season and has produced a 6.75 ERA in the Grapefruit League. During Spring Training Niese has walked seven and given up two home runs- eh. Honestly, it was a long shot chance for him to become the 5th starter, especially going up against Hernandez's pitching consistency.
We knew that Garcia had no shot as he gave away thirteen runs and built up an outrageously bad 16.71 ERA. Redding was out due to his injury in his shoulder. Martinez wasn't going to get it because of his greedy demands for a high paying contract. And now with Niese out of the competition, the spot is handed to Hernandez who has developed a great 3.07 ERA. The general manager, Omar Minaya says that if it wasn't for Livan's success, John would still be in the Majors.
Santana is by far our best pitcher and might actually be the best pitcher in the major leagues right now. He wins just about every game he pitches and if the Mets end up losing a game when he starts, the fault goes to the Bullpen. John Maine is whatever. He wins some- he losses some. He's not impressive but not unimpressive. Hes just a pitcher. Perez is either HORRIBLE or AMAZING. He's very inconsistent and is really weak under pressure. Pelfrey is pretty good. He has his bad games but all in all, he's a very talented pitcher. Livan is brand new. This is his first season pitching for the Mets so theres isnt a lot of report I could give on him but from what Ive seen so far, hes not bad. His young and talented. The projections for Hernandez in 2009 show a low-5's ERA, which is just about average for a fifth starter.
