The New York Rangers of the NHL

Whether you call them the Blueshirts, the Broadway Blueshirts, or their official name, the New York Rangers . . . if you're from the New York City Metropolitan Area, you know that the Rangers are "the team" when it comes to New York hockey.

Sure, the Islanders are from just outside New York. And Hartford is really in Connecticut. New Joisey? We won't even go there! And is Buffalo really a part of New York State? There's only one true New York team . . . the one that's been around since there were only six NHL teams . . .

The New York Rangers--New York City's Original Hockey Team!

Nope--The Rangers Were an Expansion Team

New York Americans Hockey Team patchThe National Hockey Association was formed in 1909, and was replaced by the National Hockey League in 1917.
In 1925, the Amerks (Their formal name was the New York Americans) joined the National Hockey League, bringing the New York market big league hockey. Home Ice was the rink at Madison Square Garden, in Manhattan. .The Amerks were incredibly successful, causing MSG president Tex Rickard to attempt to get a second team in spite of the fact that the Americans had been promised they would be the Garden's only hockey team.

1926 New York Rangers

Tex Rickard was granted a franchise to begin play in the 1926-27 season. Future Toronto Maple Leafs owner Conn Smythe was contracted to assemble the team, but he was fired as coach immediately before the start of the team's inaugural season.
In their second season the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, defeating the Montreal Maroons three games to two to win the league championship. Led by the "Bun Line," consisting of brothers Bill and Frederick Joseph "Bun" Cook on the wings and Frank Boucher at center, the Rangers won the Stanley Cup again in 1933.
After this, the Rangers dropped into hockey obscurity, many seasons struggling to reach 0.500.

How Did the New York Rangers Get Their Name?
The Answer's a Little Further Down the Page!

1942 -- The Rangers Stop Sharing the Spotlight

In 1942, the Rangers became the New York City metropolitan area's only major league hockey team - a distinction they would hold for the next 30 years. The demise of the New York Americans left just six NHL teams to compete for the Stanley Cup from the 1942-43 season all the way through the 1966-67 season - the final year before the modern NHL expansion began.

The name "Rangers" was a play on words. The owner of the team was Tex Rickard, and the team became known as

Many people don't realize that the National Hockey League actually existed before what they feel was Hockey's Golden Era, and they refer back to the time of "The Six Team League." For many years the league actually did consist of only six teams, all based in the Northeast United States and Eastern Canada. The teams consisted of:

The Islanders -- That Other Team From New York

World Hockey AssociationThe World Hockey Associaton was founded in 1972 as an attempt to capitalize on growing popularity of hockey and attempted to bring professional hockey to areas that were seen as underserved. Even though the New York Rangers were well-established, the National Hockey League sought to keep a competing hockey team from operating in nearby Nassau County.
As a response to the WHA, the New York Islanders were one of three National Hockey League teams formed that year. The Islanders (so-named because they play on Long Island) were popular and became successful fairly quickly, winning four consecitive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983,
But in spite of the popularity of the Islanders, the Ranger faithful continued to support the Blueshirts ... attending, watching, and listening to Islander games when the Rangers were not playing. In fact, it was not uncommon to see attendees at Islanders games with radio earplugs firmly inserted, listening to other games at the same time that they were watching the Islanders!

In the early 1970's Ranger fans, if they were careful, could listen to radio broadcasts of hockey games from New York, Boston, Long Island, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Montreal, Toronto, and Chicago.
I did!

I Love NY!

Can You be a Rangers Fan Without Loving "The City?"

People living in the suburbs of New York very seldom referred to New York City simply by the name "New York." NYC was an acceptable phrase, but more often than that, they simply referred to it as"The City." Everybody knew what city they were referring to. (Were there really any others? Anything else was a mere village in comparison.)

Very nice lens.... But I like the Devils, and they are going to the Cup this year after fighting the Rangers in the playoffs, and oh yes if you think we talk funny, go to the Bronx sometime. I will say this I do like "Most" NY Sports including The Yankees.
