Taxes, taxes, taxes!!! Good grief, but just yesterday I was reading a synopsis of taxes with regards to filing our income tax returns ... along with stern warnings of how we need to be careful and vigilant as many things have changed this year. I'm telling ya, it is a taxing situation!!

I don't see why they need to collect the taxes. I pay my taxes on anything I sell whether the taxes were taken out for me or not. I claim all taxes so Texas gets them anyway.

This is a great article and people need to go further than this. You need to go to your Senators and House of Representatives and petition them to reverse their decision on the tax laws. People do have the power to respond to these things if they will only take the step. Reversal will come but you have to make your voice heard and the more that speak up the more will be done. You say you are but one voice. But what if everyone took that stand. Nothing would ever get done. Think about it and take action.

Take this article to your congressman and women and pressure them for changes.

As a former NY resident, I am not surprised by this law. I do not support this law and think that it is going to COST the state money as opposed to increasing the states revenue. Just like NY to add another tax. They try to tax everything and it has hit the areas outside NYC especially hard.

The stupidest thing about this decision is that it will cause New York residents to loose income that is proving their families with a means to live. Therefore, NY will lose income tax by claiming the new tax, and also lose out on the new tax when their affiliates get dropped.

Great lens. Let's all cross our fingers that NY loses in the courts and this nonsense doesn't spread to any other states.

Great to know since a lot of people are involved. Spread the word! 5stars

This is a very well put together lens on an all important subject. Although I am not a NY affiliate, I can see WA wanting to follow if this survives the courts. Thank you for sharing.

Wonderful lens and extremely well done. This is one case that every online business should be aware of; whether they have an affiliate program or not.

I am so glad I don't live in New York right now, but I do live in MA and I can see Massachusetts picking up on this in a heartbeat. I really do hope that the New Yorkers can overturn this.

Go Amazon! I'm not in NY but think it was wrong for the companies to drop NY affiliates. I would change my affiliate links to their competitors and not give them free sales.
  • Margaret_Schaut May 28, 2008 @ 8:46 am | delete
Really well done, Janet! I think almost everyone, both affiliates and businesses that sell through affiliates, will be watching this one. As you say, if Amazon loses, more states will be coming for more blood!

Thank you for this comprehensive lens that is topical to myself and other New Yorkers (as well as out-of-state retailers)! A good resource and a 5-star lens.

Excellent topic selection...certainly something on the minds of Squidoo members.

Excellent research for this lens! I am just sickened by the greediness of NYS and the effect this is having on affiliate sales. I hope and pray that Amazon wins it's lawsuit.
  • triathlontraining May 27, 2008 @ 11:34 am | delete
This is going to be a huge issue, especially if Amazon loses. Other states could jump into the fray and start demanding taxes.

I'm amazed that many of the big affiliate forums aren't even talking about this yet.

I'll keep watching to see what you update.
  • SusanVillasLewis May 27, 2008 @ 11:12 am | delete
Wow! Very comprehensive, Janet! Nice job laying out all the issues and creating a great source to keep people updated. I can't even begin to imagine if I had to keep track of sales tax information. And you're right, Brian does make a good case for why companies with NY affiliates should not react to hastily.
