Are Brand Name TV Stands As Good As The Makers Say They Are? - Well This Is My Horror Story

Some time ago I purchased one of the brand name TV stands from a local appliance store to compliment our newly refurbished living room. As you can imagine, we were excited to get it home, assemble it and put our plasma screen on it to watch some television while admiring the look of this great new TV stand we just got.

Well, all was good and well with the wooden brand name TV stand (won't mention the make and model here) for at least 3 months till we noticed it was becoming more unstable then when we had first got it, yes it had a very slight wobble initially. I realized, by using the buttons on the DVD player and turning the TV on and off via the main button all the time, it was making the TV stand move from the applied force while pushing a button, causing the joints of the legs where they attached to loosen. It got to the stage where it was no longer safe, especially with the weight of a plasma TV on it, so we had to invest in another one as this one came with no warranty - Yes, that was my fault for not asking about warranty! But it's not something you think you're going to have a problem with. So much for brand name stands!

Anyway, being convinced at this stage that brand name TV stands are out of the question and with our dislike for some manufacturers of TV stands, we convinced ourselves a cheaper stand may do just as well only to find out in a short time that the top of the stand started to bow under the weight of the plasma TV.

By now, as you can imagine, we are totally P'd off at having no luck with such a simple thing as a TV stand! So this time we did our shopping for a TV stand online and to our amazement, came across more brand name TV stands which looked really nice, and the reviews for the stand we were considering were great . So to cut a long story short, we decided to go with a TV stand from a reputable maker, had it delivered and finally for the third time, we mounted the TV on top of it and 1 year later, it still remains in the same position solid as ever without any wobbles or bowing from the weight. I guess it was third time lucky huh?

So the moral of the story here is to choose from brand name TV stands which have been tested, designed and manufactured by reputable and reliable TV stand manufacturers - which have warranty included I might add! And let me not forget to mention to stay away from cheaper TV stands, especially if you have a heavy plasma screen to put on it . At least by purchasing online, you'll be given the chance to see if others are happy with their purchase. Now that's something you can't do offline ;-)

Good luck - and please feel free to share with us your story about a TV stand from hell, if you have one?

We have our wide screen plasma on top of the dresser. A stand would be sweet.

Yes, I've had some bad experiences buying wooden furniture over the last few years. They just don't make it as well as they used to.

This is good information for anyone choosing TV stand. I was thinking of getting a LCD then a nice TV stand, now, maybe I would just hang it on the wall.

I'm going to buy a new plasma soon and I'll chose carefully when it comes to TV stands for it. Thx!

Very cool. I bought a 42 inch plasma last year, and even though I love the TV, I hate the TV stand I chose. There's very little room for growth of a home theatre system, and especially accessing wires when you need to.

If I had spent even a fraction of the time picking out a TV stand as I did my TV, it would have made a huge difference.

Same problem here man ! But we have an LCD so I guess it's a little lighter than a plasma. Keeps wobbling everytime you move it.

Thanks for the warning about TV stands. I must agree there are some really dodgy furniture makers out there these days.
