Examples of Niche Content Websites

For anyone new to the world of Internet marketing or website promotion, the word niche pops up all the time. Everyone talks about finding niches and creating niche content websites or websites promoting niche products. But, few people answer the question, "How do I find a Niche to Target?"

A little further down the page, you'll see listings for a few niche examples and websites that focus on them. But first, lets talk about finding a niche in the first place.

The thing that makes a niche good are that people are already actively interested in it and searching for information and buying products. One of the easiest ways to find niches with decent audiences is to head over to your local bookstore. Visit the magazine section and see what's there. Magazines are expensive to make, so if someone is making one, you can bet there is an audience for the subject.

Another way to do the same thing is to visit sites like eBay or Amazon and see what is in their top products listings. Watch for news reports on popular products and pay attention to what Oprah is talking about.

Once you gather some niche ideas, then you have to 'drill down' to find even more focused topics...

Niche Examples

Several Examples of Niche Content Websites in Action...

Colossal TV - This niche site is setup as a storefront with a collection of content items listed as well to draw in traffic from search engines. A piece of software called Build-A-Niche-Store was used to create it. The primary methods of income are Adsense ads and product feeds from eBay.

Energy Efficient Heating and Cooling - This is a pretty interesting site that has a lot of useful information about efficient ways to heat and cool your home. The majority of this site is focused on content articles with Adsense ads and relevant affiliate products sprinkled throughout the articles on the site.

Authority Membership Sites - This is a very straight-forward niche content site. There is a collection of narrow topical articles with Adsense ads and promotions for a few affiliate products.

E-Book Marketing Secrets - Another straight-forward niche content site. There is a collection of narrow topical articles with Adsense ads and promotions for a few affiliate products.

Platinum eProducts - This niche site has an interesting twist. It features downloadable products for Internet marketers. Each product has a short 'pitch page' but some of the premium download links require a paid membership before you can access the actual files - very clever. Each product page is viewable to the public and the search engines, but the goodies will cost a few dollars! Oh, and (surprise) there are Adsense ads as well.

Best Air Purifier Deals Online - This site is like the Colossal TV site, but built with different software. EBay product feeds make up the bulk of the page content, but, there are other bits of content thrown in as well to lure the search engine traffic.

Drilling Down For Long-Tail Keywords

Getting Specific

The competition for a niche gets smaller as the niche gets narrower. And, when the niche gets narrower, most searchers are close to a buying decision. So, the first step in developing a niche website is to drill down into a broad topic.

There are a number of tools to find a niche and evaluate the competition for the keywords. These are my recommendations:

Free Keyword Tool at Wordtracker - Type in a keyword and this amazing tool will generate a list of phrases for that keyword and tell you the volume of searches being done for the keyword phrase. The full Wordtracker tool is even more powerful - but requires a pricey subscription. You can subscribe for a short period, generate a bunch of keywords to work on and then end your subscription. When you need more keywords, sign-up again!

Google Adsense keyword Tool - This is another great free tool to use to discover potential keywords. You don't get specific traffic numbers, but rather relative graphs showing overall volume and competition. One amazingly useful feature allows you to enter the URL of a website and Google then sifts through the site content and creates a list of keywords from it. Using that in combination with WordTracker will give you an excellent idea of what niches are viable.

Micro-Niche Finder - I don't know what I would do without this program. It is one of the best investments I have ever made. Type in a keyword and it will create a list of long tail search terms for you. It will also tell you how often the phrase is searched, the strength of the competition, the number of pages that exactly match the phrase, and much more. Visit the site for a detailed rundown of all the features.

I use Micro-Niche Finder to quickly locate phrases I can dominate easily.
