Woman of Many Talents

Once upon a time there was a woman named Nicole. Well, Nicki, really. She never did feel like a "Nicole". So this woman, she liked to write. And sleep. It's really hard to say which she preferred, but if one could do both at the same time, certainly she would be the happiest woman in the world. Nicki was a wife and a mother, and when she wasn't writing or sleeping she was parenting and doing wifely things. Why do you ask?

What's In A Name?

The story behind mine.

When I was in grade school, "Nicole" was the popular name. There were three of us - sort of like there are three "Olivia's" in my daughter's class right now.

Of course, it was the most popular girl who decided to change her name first. She went from Nicole to Niki one summer, coming back even cooler, if that was possible.

Then the next girl on the popularity ladder switched. Maybe it was because she wanted to be like Niki, but maybe not. Maybe she was just cool enough to know what she wanted...in fifth grade. At any rate, she went from Nicole to Nikki.

I was the follower. Practically the same week as Nikki, I went from Nicole to Nicki. I had to use different spelling - we couldn't get mixed up after all.

It took me weeks to train my parents to my new name. My grandparents took years. Even though my grandmother finally switched, she has now decided that I will always be Nicole.

I love to write - but I've never been published.”

NaNoWriMo and Me

My noveling experience explained

In 2003 I discovered National Novel Writing Month by clicking on a random link that said something about writing a novel in November. I had no idea what it was about, but I saw "novel" and "writing" and I had signed up practically before I'd read anything about the program.

Since then I've written seven novels (about to be eight after November 30th, 2010), 50,000 words or more, strictly between November 1st and November 30th of each year. It's amazing. It's spastic. It has it's highs and lows.

It always contains improper quantities of caffeine.

Good Reads

Some of my All Time Favorites

There are some books I could read a million times. These are all a selection from a really great book series (or character group), and each one is worth its weight in gold. Check them out!

Wait, they're all romance? Did I mention I read (or used to) a lot of romance novels? *blush*

Tim Ferris

Life Hacker

I feel about Tim the way I feel about Seth (Godin). There's nothing he says that isn't worth at least giving a listen to. I read his book The 4-Hour Workweek, and I think for the completely motivated individual, it's absolute gold. Worth it's weight in gold, and then some. Whatever really valuable analogy you can think of, that's it.

He's got a blog, too: The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss

Julia Quinn

ROFLMAO

These are just hilarious historical romances. Seriously. I never laugh as hard as I do as when I'm reading her novels.

Mary Jo Putney

Sweet, heartbreaking historical romances

The first romance novel I ever bought from Barnes & Noble was One Perfect Rose, by Mary Jo Putney. All of her books are heart-wrenching, and perfectly executed at that. Read them all, you will never be disappointed.

Sherrilyn Kenyon

Sexy, Sexy Men & the Greek Pantheon

Whoo, this woman writes some HOT books. I haven't read a single one I don't like, and I am particularly enamored of The Dark Hunter series. Acheron..mmmmm....

MaryJanice Davidson

Romance Novelist Extraordinaire

I really, really enjoy reading MaryJanice Davidson's books. She wrote an ebook, too, called Escape The Slush Pile, which I bought and really, really enjoyed. If I held out any hope of ever becoming a published author, I would totally be doing everything she suggests in it. :)

Jennifer Weiner

She had me with Good In Bed

I read an excerpt from Good In Bed in a fashion magazine, and I was hooked. She hasn't written a ton of books like some of my favorite authors have, but what she's written is enjoyable, real life kind of stuff. Heartbreak and humor abound. Good stuff.

Seth Godin

Marketing God(in)

Okay, seriously - I'll never learn as much about marketing that Seth Godin has forgotten. I really, really enjoy reading what Seth has to say, and while I may not always be able to implement it exactly as it's written, I always walk away with something good. Whether you're an honest to goodness marketing genius, or just want to help your business do better, you can't go wrong with a little Godin.

Check out his blog, too, at Seth's Blog.

Writing is my life, but it is not enough. I also parent, read, sleep, and love. (Not necessarily in that order.) ;)
