Handmade Knits by Clever Crafters
The process of knitting is as popular today as it was in ancient times. The origin of this fiber art can be traced back to the 15th century where it is thought that shepherds tending their flocks were probably knitters, and traders knitted as they rode their donkeys while leading camel caravans east to India and west to Egypt.
Knitting is attributed to the Spaniards, but the Scots claim it and perhaps they came up with it independently. Knitting was man's work until the invention of the commercial knitting machine in England in 1589, then women became the hand-knitters.
Handicrafts created by knitting is the focus of this page, with examples of various knitting techniques and stitches displayed for your pleasure in beautifully handcrafted items created by clever crafters... many on Etsy!

Knitting
*The technique of Knitting turns thread or yarn into cloth and crafts by using consecutive loops (stitches) cast onto and held on a needle until another loop is passed through them. Single-pointed needles of aluminum, plastic, steel or wood are used in pairs to 'knit' back and forth in rows.
Shetland Lace Knitting
An 'Ancient Art' still beautiful today!
Lace Knitting originated in the Shetland Islands of Scotland early in the 19th century. Mrs. Jessie Scanlon visited the island to show the islanders a collection of fine Spanish lace. Inspired by its beauty, the inhabitants developed a technique of knitting lace fabric. The yarn was woven from the wool that grows around the sheep's neck and knitted on fine steel needles. This item was called a 'Ring Shawl'.All the patterns have colorful names and represented objects the knitters saw around them, such as horseshoe, Cat's Paw and Bird's Eye. When complete, ring shawls measure about 6 x 6 feet, but weigh only three ounces. So 'gossamer-fine', the entire shawl can be drawn through a wedding ring - hence the name "Ring" shawl.
Traditionally, Ring Shawls were made as christening robes and also make beautiful winter wedding veils.
Knitted lace can also be used for lace edging for pillow cases and in circles for a table.

“*The basic knitting stitches are to 'knit' or to 'purl'. Patterns can be made by combining the two.”
Garter Stitch in Knitting
Every row is the same stitch!
The Garter Stitch in Knitting is the simplest of all knitting patterns. It is formed by working every row in the same stitch, either all knit or all purl. If you purl every row, the result is not as smooth or even a surface as knitted rows, so garter stitch usually means "to Knit each row". The end result looks like the example shown above.

This Red Baby Dress
is Adorable in a Knitted Garter Stitch
Susanna, a fashion designer and knitter from Portugal, specializes in baby clothes like this Knitted Baby Dress in Red. She shares her lovely handknit baby clothes in her Etsy Shop Tender Blue. Stockinette Stitch in Knitting
Knit one row, purl one row
Stockinette-stitch fabric is very smooth and each column (called a "wale") resembles a stacked set of "V"'s. It is created by alternately knitting one row and purling the next. The knit side is usually called the 'right' side. If the pattern uses the purl side as the right side, it is then called a 'reversed' stockinette stitch.
Because this stitch is so smooth, it's the perfect knit stitch for socks.

Stockinette Stitch...
Is great for hand-knit socks
The smoothness of the Stockinette stitch makes it perfect for hand knitted socks, as seen here in these Turquoise & Cream handknit socks.Joy of Joyful Handknits creates the lovely handknits for her Etsy shop from her home in Lebanon, Oregon. In addition to these lovely socks, all knitted in the round with a combination of washable wool and Acrylic blend yarns, Joy, who has been knitting all her life, now also spins much of her own yarn and uses it to create beautiful Handspun Beanies and little girl ponchos. Just click on the link above to see all of Joy's beautiful knitted items.
Moss Stitch in Knitting
Also known as the 'Seed' Stitch
The 'Moss' or 'Seed' stitch in knitting is created by simply alternating between the knit and purl stitches. Along each row, the knitter 'knits one stitch, purls one stitch'. On the next row, the process is done in reverse - 'purl one, knit one'. This creates the pattern that looks like little 'seeds'. This stitch is easy enough for a beginner knitter. The knitted item produced is given a nice texture, as well as an attractive appearance. The 'seed' or 'moss' stitch works well for such items as knitted scarves, hats, and mittens, as well as wraps and throws and baby blankets!
Basket or Basketweave Stitch in Knitting
A Variation on the Moss (or Seed) Stitch
The Basket stitch is produced by Increasing multiples of the Knit 1, Purl 1 combination that creates the Moss (or Seed) stitch. In this stitch, you knit 4, purl 4 across the row, reversing the process ((P4, K4) in the next row on an alternating basis. In the Basketweave variation, knit and purl is done in multiples of 10 (K7, P3).

Fisherman Knit or Aran Knit
A Traditional Irish Knit
One of the traditional forms of knitting that is familiar to us is what is sometimes known as the 'Fisherman' Sweater, a bulky garment that has prominent cable patterns on the chest and is best known in it's cream-colored form. It is also known by the name Aran, taking it's name from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland.
The sweaters are distinguished by their use of complex textured stitch patterns, several of which are combined in the creation of a single garment. The sweater usually features 4-6 texture patterns that move down the sweater in columns from top to bottom. Usually, the patterns are symmetrical to a center axis extending down the center of the front and back panel and usually extend down the sleeves as well. The same textured knitting is also used to make socks, hats, vests and even skirts.
Some stitch patterns have a traditional interpretation, often of religious significance. The honeycomb is a symbol of the hard-working bee. The cable, an integral part of the fisherman's daily life, is said to be a wish for safety and good luck when fishing. The diamond is a wish of success, wealth and treasure. The basket stitch represents the fisherman's basket, a hope for a plentiful catch.
