Night People vs. Morning People
Ranked #958 in Relationships & Family, #123,430 overall
HERE'S WHAT I THINK
By now, most people are aware of the Lark/Owl theory--which holds that some of us are naturally programmed to be early birds, while others are hard-wired to be night owls.
Anyone who believes the difference is that simple has never been in a Lark/Owl relationship. Whether you find yourself involved in one of these mixed relationships with a room-mate, a spouse, significant other or family member, there's a lot more here than meets the eye!
Oh, it seems simple enough. "Larks" like to go to bed early and are happy to get up early. "Owls", on the other hand, stay up late and are not early risers. That's close, but the truth (as I see it), is that night people are far more tolerant, whereas morning people would be happy only if everyone got up early.
Night People and Morning People are polar opposites. According to time honored wisdom, opposites attract. Could that explain why so many easygoing, live-and-let-live night owls end up living with my-way-is-the-right-way, morning loving larks?

It's Complicated.
Here's why....
Example: Early bird and night owl, at home on a Saturday night. Early bird yawns, pointedly checks the clock (it's almost 9 pm!) and yawns again, dramatically this time. When this goes unremarked, early bird announces "I think it's time for bed". Owl, who can't even imagine packing it in at 9 on a weekend, bids Lark a cheerful goodnight, turns down the TV and tiptoes quietly around until finally feeling tired enough for bed.In the morning, will our Night Owl be accorded the same consideration? Not quite. Early Bird will leap from bed before the alarm rings, having set it for 6am, in case s/he "overslept" (and remember, it's Sunday), won't turn the alarm off, but will turn on the brightest light in the room, and then walk out. Think this is accidental? Try calling out "Hey, you forgot to turn off the light". The response will be something like this: "If people would get up in the morning like they should, the light wouldn't bother them, would it?" This retort will be followed by the sounds of breakfast being prepared. These sounds will seem unusually loud.
If the night owl turns off the light, tunes out the noise, and manages to go back to sleep, within minutes early bird's alarm will ring. If that fails, other passive/aggressive methods will be brought into play. Why? Because, to a night person ,"early to bed and early to rise", is just a rather baffling personal choice; but, to a morning person, staying up late and sleeping in should not even be a choice. It's lazy, selfish, and irresponsible, and it's just plain wrong. Therefore, any misfortune that befalls a night owl will be traced directly to the fact that s/he didn't go to bed or get up "on time".
Flat tire made you late for work? If you got up earlier, you could leave for work an hour or so early, to allow for such things.
Got the flu? If you didn't insist on staying up all hours of the night, you'd have better immunity.
Got mugged walking to your car after the movie? If you'd gone to a matinee instead of the last screening, you'd have been in no danger.
You get the idea.
Morning people remain steadfast in the face of scientific research. Genetically predisposed sleep patterns? Circadian rhythms? Basal temperature? Sleep stages? Utter nonsense! As every early bird knows, these are merely excuses for indolence.
YOUR TURN!
What's the verdict?
ARE MORNING PEOPLE INFLEXIBLE AND INTOLERANT?
ARE NIGHT PEOPLE LAZY AND UNDISCIPLINED?
YOU DECIDE!
Are The Early Birds Too Judgmental Of The Night Owls?

Yes, some of us just aren't Morning People!
chrisssy says:
Yes, everybody tries to say were lazy, meanwhile some of us have reasons. I was a bartender. I wasn't getting home til 5-6 o'clock in the morning most days. I get settled, come 7-9 in the morning i'd go to sleep and 1-3 in the afternoon I wake up
jksterling says:
I'm a morning person but I love that everyone else in the house isn't. It's the only time our home is quiet and I cherish the time.
karmicchristian says:
There are 24 hours at one's disposal in a day, and most of us spend hardly 8 hours sleeping! Who cares if it is during night or day!? :)
brando87 says:
I'm an unintentional morning person. I used to sleep in, but since I finished my undergrad and started working I just don't anymore - even when I want to. I'm not judgemental of people who do stay up late and sleep in. My wife is a night owl.
sousababy says:
Yes, I definitely do my best work later in the day (even late at night). I have never been a morning person. My sister is the opposite and very unsympathetic - although she's an unpleasant soul to be around late at parties, whereas I can party til 2 am. There really IS a biology behind this . . the key is to find an occupation that accommodates your circadian rhythm best.
Linda Deal says:
I'm forced to be a morning person by the hours of my job. I feel like a left hand wearing a right-handed glove.
kiwisoutback says:
I'm married to a "Lark," and I've lived with Larks before. They often do have the attitude of staying up late is "evil", even though it's really the time many people function at their best (like me, writing this comment at midnight -- just getting started!).
GrowWear says:
I do feel that some early birders are judgmental. Trying to make others feel bad for being night owls is just plain mean. I would be incensed if someone disturbed my sleep in such a way as you described.
MaxReily says:
As a lifelong Night Owl, who has always been surrounded by Morning People, (and who has never tried to force them to stay up at night), I offer a resounding Yes!
No way! Getting up early is what we're meant to do.
Mari says:
Night owls are rude and insensitive they listen to tv/radio loud and leave every light in the house on. Just the opposite of what you say in the article. Morning people tiptoe around in the early hours trying not to wake the sleeping beauty's
Ladyeaglefeather says:
Funny, but I am both. There are times when I am up by 5am. Than there are times when I would rather sleep in. So, I do.
Pastiche says:
Actually, I'm both now that I'm a "senior" ... I might get sleepy around 10 but then get a second wind and stay up late, then I always wake up before 7am, no matter what time I retire. Go figure.
Studies have indicated that self-described morning people have shorter circadian rhythms than self-identified night owls. This means that morning people sleep through their peak hour of sleepiness, so they wake up feeling refreshed. Evening types usually wake up right around their peak hour of sleepiness, so they may have high levels of melatonin and feel groggy

- It's difficult living in the same room with someone who not only wakes and sleeps at different times, but who isn't respectful or considerate of your needs. Some friends of mine would leave the air conditioning at 50 degrees because they were hot while everyone was freezing, not to mention not washing dishes.
