Sewing a Nightgown

Patterns for Sewing Nightgowns

I wore nightgowns when I was a kid; I even remember a few of my favorites. Now that I have a daughter, I can tuck her into bed wearing a cozy and cute nightgown. Long ones are her favorite - she calls then jammie dresses. :) I also love to sew, and sewing nightgowns can be pretty quick and simple. You can personally pick the most comfortable and pretty design to make your own cozy creation. Below are some resources for sewing patterns, instructions and fabrics for making your own nightgowns for you or to give as personalized gifts.

Morris, a contributing editor at Threads magazine, clearly gets a kick out of sewing, and here she communicates this enthusiasm to the reader while covering thoroughly such lingerie sewing-related subjects as selecting the right pattern and fabric, adapting patterns and fitting, and finishing and embellishing. For Morris, lingerie includes not only underwear but also sleepwear and loungewear. Included are many tips and ideas for sewing "outside the box." For example, why not wear your sheets to bed, making sleepwear out of cotton or flannel sheets? Why not turn an oversized shirt pattern into a loungewear top?

Have you sewn a nightgown for yourself or a gift?

I haven't yet, but I think I'm going to make one for my daughter to wear on Christmas morning.

You know, I don't actually remember ever making a nightgown. I have made tons of undergarments for costumes and I have made a few renaissance dresses that look a lot like nightgowns, but I don't believe I have ever made a gown for sleeping, well unless you include the ones for babies. I have made babies gowns before.

Hi, I didn't know you sewed...so do I. And yes, I have made nightgowns for my daughter but I personally don't wear anything to bed(whoops-that was personal-sorry) but I still love to turn all my clothing into something unique by changing them as soon as I buy them. And I make all our curtains, slipcovers, and now granddaughter's clothes. thanks for showing me that fabric is available on eBay. Never thought to look there before. 5*

You know something -- a nightgown is something that I have never sewn ever! I've surely sewn a host of everything else -- even curtains for the house. That broke a couple of the needles for sure!
