Welcome to Night Sky Knits!

Night Sky Knits is my store on Etsy.com, where I offer all the colorful scarves and blankets that I knit for fun. Stop in and have a look around!

Why Knitting?

When I was young, my mom tried to teach me to crochet. It didn't stick. Fast-forward to a few years ago -- my father was stuck in the hospital and I had to find a way to kill the time.

Enter knitting! The time was right and this time learning the basic garter stitch stuck! Soon enough I was turning out scarves by the dozen. Eventually I branched out and learned a few more stitches, as well as some basic patterns.

My favorite yarn to use is Homespun, made by Lion Brand Yarn. It's a thicker weight, with a bit of chunkiness to it. It knits up nicely and makes super warm and soft scarves and blankets!

When finished scarves and blankets began to pile up, I decided to join Etsy and sell them. The result is what you see, Night Sky Knits.

Mexicana Scarf

Basic Knit Scarves

The first project I ever took on was a scarf. From there I perfected the basic stitch in knitting, known as the "garter stitch". Some are done in a solid color. I found using variegated yarn resulted in beautiful waves of color, resulting in bright scarves.

Some of the scarves get finished with fringe, giving the item a different look. Others are left plain, giving them a more classic look.

Byzantine Ribbed Scarf

Ribbed Scarves

The second stitch in knitting is called purling. Learning this stitch allowed me to learn my first knitting pattern. The result is what is called "ribbing".

Scarves knitted in a ribbed pattern result in a much thicker scarf, which is also super stretchy. I've done several in solid and variegated yarns, as well as developed my own color patterns.

Berry Jam Blanket

Baby Blankets and Throws

I got into making blankets and throws by accident. A friend of mine had a baby and I thought it would be a cool present. Lo and behold, knitting blankets spiraled from there!

Some of them are a solid color; others I do in the "three block" style I came up with. Three colors either in a shade range or a complementary mix.

All blankets are done in in a garter stitch/purl stitch pattern, which makes them lay flat. The ends are done in a way that makes them curl slightly. The result is a super cozy blanket!

It's a long, long time since I have done any knitting! The first item of clothing I ever knitted was a red and blue football (you call it soccer in the USA) scarf!
