Nighttime Acid Reflux Attack Overview

If you suufere from heartburn then nighttime is probably the worst time for you.

Despite its name, heartburn has nothing to do with heart. Heartburn is a burning feeling in the lower chest. It can be accompanied with a sour and bitter taste in the throat or mouth. Many people feel the heartburn after eating a big meal or while lying down. It can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

The main reason for the heartburn is the sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach either opens at the wrong time or is weak and doesn't completely close. So the acid flows back into the esophagus causing the burning sensation.

It is very easy for the stomach aside to flow back into esophagus and then into the throat when you lay in horizontal position. So it is a good idea to prevent it from happening to sleep on a higher pillow so you body is not in a completely horizontal position.

Another thing you need to do is have your meal no later than two hours before you go to bed. That will help reduce acid during the night.
