Symphonic Metal Bliss
Nightwish is a Finnish band formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee. The band's leader, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen composes songs that are often classified as either symphonic metal or power metal; their musical style has also been described as a symphonic metal variant, called opera metal. Nevertheless, Nightwish is considered one of the main developers of the symphonic metal genre, which encompasses similar bands such as Therion, Stratovarius, Epica, Sonata Arctica and Visions of Atlantis.
The band currently consists of Anette Olzon (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (Keyboards), Jukka Nevalainen (Drums), Marco Hietala (Bass and vocals) and Emppu Vuorinen (Guitars). Although the band achieved prominence in their home country since the release of their first single, they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums Century Child (2002) and Once (2004), both which had video clips shown on the MTV channel of countries from the American continent, for example.
With Once album (2004), Tuomas developed the symphonic part of Nightwish music, using orchestra, choirs an also native-american instruments. At the same time the band went away from metal roots, which can be heard in Jukka's drum playing (which is much simpler than on previous albums), as well as guitarwork. Guitars are mostly used to play simple rythmics. (read more)

Poll: Tarja Turunen vs. Anette Olzon
Tarja is a great singer and Annette is too. Ok, you can say you don`t like Annette, but she has already proven that she is a technically good singer. The tour is long already and she is still hanging in there and giving good concerts.
Evanescence or Nightwish?
OK. I just heard something on the TV and it was so funny that I just had to share it. While reviewing the latest music video of Nightwish, one of the guests said that when he had first heard Evanescence, he immediately thought 'Which Finnish band is making a cheap copy of Nightwish?' For some reason I laughed my lungs out on this one.
Which band do you like more and why?

Evanescence comes out wh a new album even more rarely, which makes their albums more valuale when they finally do come out. For example: Evanesence has been around since abou I believe it was 2003 and they only hav 2 albums ou as of today (November 2, 2009) where as Nightwish has like, 6 out already so theirs aren't as valluable when they come out because they aren't as ar or uncommon. plus when Evanescence comes out with new albums it is worth that long, long wait. And trust me I am in metal band called "Immortals' Dead" and i kno wht it means o be of valable find, even though we haven't even made it out of the rage rehearsals yet.

Evanescence. However, both bands are absolutely incredible. I feel like I can connect to Amy Lee's lyrics a little more than Tuomas's although I really like both. Sometimes his are kinda confusing. But when it comes to the actual music (no singing), Tuomas definately knows how to properly incorperate an orchestra. I really like both bands for different reasons. But when it comes down to it, I must say I like Evanescence better.

This is the first I'm hearing of Nightwish, but clearly there's some similarities - except Nightwish seems heavier and she has a more interesting voice.

I've never heard of these guys (and girl), but after listening to the Youtube video, I'd definitely consider giving them a listen. Sounds like Evanesence has some explaining to do if Nightwish was first! Squid Angel blessed.
