Everything you need to know about the NIH

Are you considering taking a job at the NIH? Receiving medical care there or entering a clincal trial?

The NIH website is huge and daunting. I hope that I can distill down the most important information you'll need here--in a format that is much easier to use.

If you need help, please drop me a note. The NIH website is insane, believe me. I was on your end of the stressful job hunt and I have helped a relative find their way into a clincal trial (plus been in a few myself). I've been a summer-time employee while a student and now work there as a fellow. So, I'd love to help if I can.

Job Perks

So, what's so great about working at the NIH?

Benefits
1) If you're a fellow or an employee, your health insurance is paid for. Those of you looking for fellowships will know by know that this is not standard.
2) "Recreation and Welfare" provides a lot of cool things on campus: a fitness center, cheap movie and theater tickets, help with housing, discounts on Apple computers, and more.
3) At least for fellows, the pay is above average. For regular employees, expect regular pay increases and lots of job security.
4) If you are a scientist, you'll find access to all sorts of shared equipment, amazing co-workers, and not having to worry about your grant-funding vanishing on you.

Getting Around at the NIH

Getting Around at the NIH
*NIH Campus Map
*Security on Campus. This changes every few months--so be sure to read through this. At the minimum, you're going to need an ID card for everyone traveling onto campus and be willing to have your car and its contents looked over.
*Information on Visiting the Library of Medicine.
*Information about the DC-area subway system

Excellent! A friend of mine used to work there, but has since retired with an excellent package! I work for HHS in Montgomery County Government. We refer patients there whenever we can!
