Canada OKs Plan to Walk across Niagra Falls

On Wednesday, February 15, 2012, Canada okayed the plan for Nik Wallenda to become the first person in history to ever walk directly over Niagra Falls. The tightrope walk will take place this summer.

On Friday, September 23, 2011, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill giving Nik Wallenda final approval to cross Niagra Falls on a tightrope. Apparently the desire to boost area tourism and confidence in Wallenda's abilities contributed to the decision.

Wallenda hopes to win Canadian approval as well so that his walk goes from the USA to Canada.

Jean Francois Gravelot, better known as "The Great Blondin," made 10 crossings beginning in 1859. The French acrobat added increasingly difficult obstacles during each stunt.

The daredevil stunt tentatively scheduled for May or June 2012 will air as part of Wallenda's reality show Life on a Wire, which premiered June 22, 2011, on the Discovery Channel.

Nik Wallenda Skywalks in Sarasota

Celebrates Opening of Circus Sarasota

About 700 people held their breath as they watched Nik Wallenda glide along an inch-thick wire stretched about 200 feet above the ground between two tall buildings in downtown Sarasota, Florida on February 4, 2010. Weather conditions were a gusty 15 miles per hour.

About halfway through the skywalk, Wallenda began an uphill climb on the wire at a 15-foot incline to reach the top of the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota.

Wallenda, age 31, gripped the wire wearing special shoes and completed his 600-foot-long skywalk carrying a 45-pound balancing pole. Fellow Sarasota-native and circus performer Bello Nock, the big-hair clown, helped Wallenda off the wire and onto the roof of the hotel.

The dramatic stunt drew attention to Wallenda's upcoming performances with Circus Sarasota, which took place during February 2010 in Sarasota, Florida and during March 2010 in Fort Myers, Florida. The highwire artist hopes to skywalk the Grand Canyon.

The Circus: 1870-1950

Edited by Noel Daniel

During its heyday 100 ago, the American circus ranked as the largest entertainment industry in the the world. From the mid-1800s to mid-1900s, traveling American circuses performed for audiences of up to 14,000 per show, employed as many as 1,600 men and women, and crisscrossed the country on 20,000 miles of railroad in one season alone. The spectacle of death-defying daredevils, strapping super-heroes and scantily-clad starlets, fearless animal trainers, and startling freaks gripped the American imagination, outshining theater, vaudeville, comedy, and minstrel shows of its day, and ultimately paved the way for film and television to take root in the modern era. Organized into nine thematic chapters, the book sheds new light on circus history, from a behind-the-scenes look at life on the move, to the freedoms enjoyed by early female performers, to the innovative production skills that demanded as much know-how as a modern-day film production.

Very nice lens and interesting that this wire walking is still done by a Wallenda. My mom was godmother to one of the Wallenda children in the late 30's but I don't know the name. I had a Codona stop by and comment on one of my lenses, but the comment never showed up (I still have the email)
