Niki de Saint Phalle: Artist, Fashion Model, Writer, AIDS Activist... Renaissance Woman!

Renaissance: A revival of intellectual or artistic achievement and vigor

No truer term than "renaissance woman" could sum up late artist and fashion model Niki de Saint Phalle, whose extraordinary sculptures currently are on special exhibit at Chicago's Garfield Park Conservatory.

Many Americans may have been at least a little familiar with de Saint Phalle's 1980s-launched designer fragrance bearing her exotic name, Niki de Saint Phalle.  Fewer are likely are familiar with the phenomenal background of this French-American artist: her colossal and dazzling sculptures; her years as a fashion cover model for magazines including Elle and Life; and her legendary eccentric persona.

Thanks to the Chicago Park District, countless international tourists and residents now have the opportunity to experience de Saint Phalle's exciting work.

Don't miss this dazzling, delightful, fun, relaxing and whimsical exhibit

Chicago's magical Garfield Park Conservatory currently features a breathtaking exhibit of 60 de Saint Phalle sculptures. But the exhibit "Niki In the Garden" will only be in Chicago through October 31, 2007, so get there soon if you can.

For full details about the Chicago exhibit, check Associated Content, "Niki In the Garden."

Displayed both indoors, in an Amazon Jungle-ish setting, and outdoors in the sprawling garden, Niki's huge, mosaic-style sculptures are loved by families with kids and couples alike. Because you can touch, walk through and/or sit on almost all of Niki's work!

If you love art -- and even if you don't -- this exhibit is one you'll be thrilled you checked out, particularly on a hot summer day. It's almost as if you're in Paris or another exotic city. Or at Stonehenge redecorated by a jeweler.

Admission is only $5 for adults, and children are admitted free.

Meanwhile, enjoy a few shots I snapped of her remarkable work and the flora surrounding it for this unique, world class exhibit.

The Scent of Imagination: "Niki de Saint Phalle Perfume"

The artist designed collectible bottles and packaging for her successful fragrance line

De Saint Phalle's powerful yet feminine fragrance launched in 1982. Its packaging arguably is still among the most compelling ever. In fact, de Saint Phalle took the art of perfume package design to new heights by having hers boldly mirror her bold, frenetic art.

Anchored in the mesmerizing color cobalt blue, there was no way you could saunter past this perfume in a high-end fashion boutique or department store. Like Niki's sculptures, the bottles invite your touch and complete engagement. And once you've gotten a whiff of her woodsy, exotic fragrance, you'll just had to have it. (At least, *I* did!)
