Nikon budget mid-range zoom lens

This DX (cropped digital sensor) Nikon lens is available separately or as a kit with some digital (DSLR) camera bodies. The lens features AF-S Silent Wave autofocus - which means that all of the Nikon digital camera bodies can autofocus with this lens, even cheaper cameras like the Nikon D3000> and Nikon D5000 which don't have an onboard focusing motor. The lens incorporates Vibration Reduction which means that pictures can be taken at slower shutter speeds than for an equivalent lens without VR (perhaps ⅓ the minimum speed for a non-VR).

The lens is a typical Nikon budget mid-range zoom so it is light (420g, 14.8oz), has a plastic mount (not metal) and has variable aperture F3.5 - F5.6. Optical quality is supposedly so-so, with particular problems at 18mm.

Will it suit you?

(My personal opinion)

This lens may suit you if this mostly describes you:

  • You use a digital camera which requires an AF-S lens (eg D40, D60, D3000, D5000)

  • You like a zoom lens with a large range which can sit on the camera

  • You can't afford the 18-200mm VR lens, or find it too heavy or large

  • You take pictures in low light (ie need VR) of stationary or slow-moving objects

  • A light lens is important to you

Will it not suit you?

(My personal opinion)

This lens may not suit you if this mostly describes you: -

  • You use digital cameras with a full frame sensor (ie the pro-level bodies costing several thousand dollars) because of the vignetting issues

  • You don't need such a big zoom range or VR - the D70 18-70mm (non-VR) kit lens has a better reputation

  • Optical quality is very important to you - and you're willing to pay for it

  • You shoot moving objects in low light - you need a faster lens

  • You need a very robust lens because you photograph in rugged conditions

  • You know what "bokeh" means ... and it matters to you
