Nikon Cameras

Inspired by someone wanting to buy a D3100, I thought it would be good to showcase the work of people using other Nikon cameras for print on demand. (So as not to mislead, the photo on the left was taken with a Fuji Finepix!) My own is a D5000 with a kit 18-55 lens, a 70-300 VR zoom, and an old, purchased from ebay, Tamron manual SP 90mm macro lens.
So for starters, the 18-55 lens.
This is a 300 pixel square crop taken from the top left corner of the following poster. There's a little bit of noise, but contrary to microstock sites requirements, I don't think noise is necessarily a bad thing (and I do have Neat Image, so I could remove it if necessary).

This lens is not designed to distinguish between cameras and lenses, dSLR's or point-and-shoot, but rather how people are using them and the results. Every camera has it's plus and minus points - that's what reviews are for. For instance, my D5000 has a flip down LCD screen - invaluable to me as I like to get down low and personal with plants and insects, but for many it would be an unnecessary addition. Also, I'm going to leave out my macro lens as I don't have any photos that really represent it. It's an old lens but still very capable, it won't focus to infinity but I only use it for macro, it won't use auto focus, auto exposure or built-in flash so there's a lot of guesswork, but it's well worth considering if you need a great macro lens and your budget is tight.

VR lenses

For someone who has hands that are just a little bit shaky when holding a camera, the VR (Vibration Reduction) lenses really come into their own, especially with the longer focal lengths. Of course you can use a tripod, but that's not always convenient. This first photo is using the AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF ED (a mouthful, but all those letters are necessary to distinguish exactly which lens you're buying), purchased from Amazon. As most of the reviews say, it does get softer the higher up the focal length you get. This one was at 240mm f5.6 1/1000 second ISO200 - still acceptably sharp. I love this lens, but then, having read the reviews, I wasn't expecting the performance to be great at 300mm. If you have enough light to stop down it's probably better, and even so it's not at all bad. I have to admit I haven't experimented enough to say for sure.

The first photo here, Key West Sunset is a scan from a transparency
"shot in 2001 so I don't remember the exact exposure but I generally shoot sunsets about F13-16 and bracket my shots going down 1/3 stop at a time. I think the camera on this shot was the Nikon N65. If memory serves me right this photo was taken with a sigma lens - the 28-300 mm."
The second, Cliffs of Mohor, Ireland "was taken with the Nikon D200 - shot at F9 1.3 seconds. A polarizer and 81 a were also used with this photo. This one was shot with the Nikon 18-200 VR Lens." See nationalpark_t_shirt's store or click on one of the images for more detail.

The first photo was "taken with a Nikon Coolpix L10, which was quite a lovely little point-and-shoot. Unfortunately, it was dying when I got this shot and could not focus at all within a few weeks." In the second, a calendar, all of these were taken with a Nikon Coolpix P90, one of the "super-zoom" point-and-shoots, on P mode. See soyrwoo's store or click on the images to see more.
