Nikon D3 and D300 Digital SLR Cameras for Superb Quality .

One of the main Nikon is so popular is that many lenses and accessories from film cameras are usable on the Nikon Digital SLR Cameras. Some early lenses are not compatible though and you should check your camera manual to see which ones will fit to avoid damaging the slr camera body.

Nikon have just announced their new NIKON D3 Body and this looks like a stunning Nikon Digital SLR Camera - not least because of the 12 Megapixel pictures it takes.

The price is a bit strong though at $5450 and you should click here to find out if its available Is it Here ?

For a really Good Buy consider the D300 - with many of the FD3's Features :

                 D300 Technical Specification

The D3 - today's top Digital SLR

What a Specification !

12.1-megapixel FX-format (23.9 x 36mm) CMOS sensor
3.0-inch, super density 920,000-dot VGA color monitor; 170-degree wide-angle viewing and tempered-glass protection
Continuous shooting at up to 9 frames-per-second at full FX resolution
Fast, accurate 51-point AF with 3D Focus Tracking
Capture images to CF I/II cards
Nikon D3 Digital SLR Highlights

The D3 has a 12.1 effective megapixel FX-format (23.9 x 36mm) sensor . I think that this will give higher quality images than any other current DSLR.
The CMOS image sensor has some really neat features to give you superior quality pictures throughout the camera's exceptionally broad ISO range.

But that's not all. One of the main problems with most DSLR's is the time lag between pressing the button and taking the shot.

With the D3's sensor's high-speed 12-channel readout you'll be able to shoot camera to shoot 12.1-megapixel images at up to nine frames per second. Read that again -
NINE Frames per second !
Rejoice oh Ye Sports and Wildlife Photographers and bend the knee to Nikon for they have made a GREAT CAMERA and its a goodie !

Lots of improvements on the earlier Nikon models including an ISO range of 200 to 6400 (!)
That's the normal range and should be enough for most people (although you can alter the range to includerangesd from a finegrain ISO100 to a mind-shattering 25,600 ISO (I don't think I can even see in light conditions that low !)
.
There still IS a shutter release delay but its now down only 37 milliseconds, and a camera start-up time of 0.12 seconds.

D3 is the world's fastest digital SLR camera in its class.(As of August 207 - who knows what is going on in a clinical lab somewhere else ?)

You can actually get up to 11 frames per second by switching down to its DX-format mode but that's with 5.1 Megapixel images.

Recording speeds are rather nifty too with a very fast transfer rate indeed.
There are lots of other superb features - not least the 3 inch viewing screen and the greatly improved viewfinder.
The Picture Control System is great dor all the in-camera adjustments you will need (like brightness, contrast tone and sharpening)
You can port the controls to a D300 if you have one as a second camera so you will get identically matched results frm both.
There is a New EXPEED Image Processing System that is central to the speed and processing power of the camera. EXPEED delivers optimized performance for the camera and its features, and ensures high-image quality and high-speed image processing.

The manufacturers say that :
A New 51-point auto focus system The D3 features Nikon's Multi-CAM 3500FX auto focus sensor module, with 51 AF points, including 15 cross-type sensors that are located in the center of the frame. These cross-type sensors work with all Nikkor lenses, including those with apertures as small as f/5.6. The D3's auto focus system is closely linked with the camera's innovative Scene Recognition System to deliver greater accuracy in subject detection and focus tracking performance.

But there's MORE !
A Revolutionary new Scene Recognition system that uses the camera's built-in, 1,005-pixel RGB metering sensor to recognize the subject or scene being photographed and detect any movement. This information helps optimize exposure and white balance settings for the recognized subject and also enables the camera to assign appropriate AF points based on any movement of the subject, ensuring highly precise auto focus tracking performance.
This really deos improve digital photography in many fields incredibly.

A LiveView mode on the Superb Vieing Screen has a 170 degree viewing angle for nocusing and framing..
The viewing screen has a 920,000 dot resolution - Gulp !

You also get the ability to fine-tune lenses and save those tunings and lots more !

Click below for a fuller technical specification.

This is really the best camera body currently available.. here's the full spec:

Nikon 10.5mm lens review

An Extraordinary quality fisheye lens

I had the chance to borrow a friend's 10.5 mm digital lens and I was realy surprised at the exceptional and unusual quality of landscapes obtainable.
This is a lens really worth saving up for !
Sharp from here to the middle of next week - that was my opinion on a fine day in the mountains near my home.
Its specially designed for Nikon digital slr
and gives a full-frame fisheye picture of amazing width.
Nikon say it's 180 degrees across the diagonal (thats cheating a bit of course as most lenses are measured side to side and that is still impressive ) but the results nearly blew me away !
The lens focuses down to .46 of a foot (almost 6 inches)
The 10 ED glass elements ensure high quality results.
It has a built-in lenshood (and would suffer cut-off with any standard lenshod) and Nikon don't supply a pola filter.

Did I like it - yes - its my next lens purchase.
I can see hndreds of uses for this len - narrow streets, room interiors, etc - but the big advantage that I can see the the HUGE depth of field you'll get - sharp as a tack throughout any landscape (at a medium f-stop - say f8 or f11 )
At around $605 this is a careful decision to make.. the alternative is the Sigma 10-20mm zoom at about $100 dollars less. ($465 to $600 depending where you shop)

I bought the Sigma 70-300mm Macro lens and it's really good (but as with all 300mm lenses you do need a tripod for maximum sharpness)

Zoom and long Lenses for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

The Nikon 4.3x, 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor lens is ideal for telephoto shooting opportunities. It incorporates many of Nikon's most advanced lens design attributes such as Extra Low Dispersion (ED) glass, Silent Wave Motor technology (SWM) and Enhanced Vibration Reduction (VR II), in a design engineered for use with both Nikon DX format digital and 35mm film SLR cameras. With a high-powered 70-300mm focal length range, the lens is ideal for sports, action, wildlife, travel and portrait photography, among other telephoto applications. When used on a Nikon DX format digital SLR, this lens approximates the picture angle performance of a 105-450mm lens on a 35mm SLR camera.

Beyond the lens' incredible optical versatility is the benefit of Enhanced VR II Vibration Reduction--an innovation that makes it possible to take substantially sharper handheld pictures at slower shutter speeds than would otherwise be possible. This provides the distinct advantage of being able to shoot more effectively in a much broader variety of challenging conditions. With the new Nikon VR II advantage, users can take pictures at shutter speeds as many as 4 stops slower than they ordinarily could shoot without the image degrading blur associated with camera shake at slow shutter speeds. Nikon's advanced VR technology further enhances picture taking potential with a choice of two modes to match most shooting conditions. VR Normal Mode primarily compensates for camera shake, and includes automatic panning detection, as well as automatic tripod detection. VR Active Mode effectively compensates for vibration in situations where it is more pronounced and more frequent, such as when shooting from a moving vehicle.

To further ensure outstanding optical performance, the 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor features two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and three complex aspherical lens elements that provide for higher resolution, high-contrast images while minimizing chromatic aberration, astigmatism and other forms of distortion. The lens also features Nikon's compact Silent Wave Motor technology (SWM), which combines fast and precise autofocusing with super-quiet operation, as well as Internal Focusing (IF) construction that allows the lens to focus without changing its external size, improving balance and handling characteristics.

Amazon Price: $480.50 (as of 07/26/2008)

Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Autofocus VR Zoom Nikkor Lens

Lens-making is an art--Nikon artisans craft Nikkor optics from the finest materials, taking pride in adding their intellect and technique to bring the world's finest lenses to life. They push the leading edge of lens-making in their effort to provide the "glass" that makes the world's greatest pictures.

AF Nikkor lenses work with Nikon SLRs for optimal performance, even the very latest. The Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-5.6D ED AF VR is a compact, lightweight 5x telephoto zoom with Vibration Reduction. VR operation offers the equivalent of using a shutter speed three stops (eight times) faster. VR is automatically detected during panning operation with two modes of VR: Image plane and Viewfinder. VR for the viewfinder is cancelable to conserve battery power. Three ED glass elements ensure superior optical performance and high contrast even at maximum apertures. Filter does not rotate during zooming. The nine-blade rounded diaphragm achieves a natural blur for out-of-focus elements.

ED glass: An essential element of Nikkor telephoto lenses
Nikon developed ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass to enable the production of lenses that offer superior sharpness and color correction by minimizing chromatic aberration. Put simply, chromatic aberration is a type of image and color dispersion that occurs when light rays of varying wavelengths pass through optical glass. In the past, correcting this problem for telephoto lenses required special optical elements that offer anomalous dispersion characteristics--specifically calcium fluoride crystals. However, fluorite easily cracks and is sensitive to temperature changes that can adversely affect focusing by altering the lens' refractive index. So Nikon designers and engineers put their heads together and came up with ED glass, which offers all the benefits and none of the drawbacks of calcium fluorite-based glass. With this innovation, Nikon developed several types of ED glass suitable for various lenses. They deliver stunning sharpness and contrast even at their largest apertures. In this way, Nikkor's ED-series lenses exemplify Nikon's preeminence in lens innovation and performance.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating ensures exceptional performance
To enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, Nikon employs an exclusive multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level. Nikon Super Integrated Coating achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction. Nikon Super Integrated Coating is especially effective for lenses with a large number of elements, like our Zoom-Nikkors. Also, Nikon's multilayer coating process is tailored to the design of each particular lens. The number of coatings applied to each lens element is carefully calculated to match the lens type and glass used, and also to assure the uniform color balance that characterizes Nikkor lenses. This results in lenses that meet much higher standards than the rest of the industry.

Distance information
D-type and G-type Nikkors relay subject-to-camera distance information to AF Nikon camera bodies. This then makes possible advances like 3D Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash. Note: D-type and G-type Nikkors provide distance information to the following cameras: Auto exposure; F6, F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, F65, F60, F55, F50, Pronea S, Pronea 600i, D2 series, D1 series, D100 and D70s/D70. Flash control; F6, F5, F100, F90X, F80, F75, F70, D2 series, D1 series, D100, and D70s/D70 cameras.

Vibration Reduction (VR)
This innovative VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed three stops (eight times) faster. It allows handheld shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit interiors. The lens' VR system also detects automatically when the photographer pans--no special mode is required.

VR operation works with the Nikon F6, F5, F100, F80, F75, F65, D2-series, D1-series, D100, D70-series, and D50 cameras.
