The Nikon D90 is said to be the long-awaited replacement to the ever so popular D80. The D90 Builds on the on the features of the D80 while including many features of the more expensive D300.

The most talked about feature of the Nikon D90 is it's HD video capability. Yes, this is the "first D-SLR with a movie function". But don't let that take away from it's ability to capture professional quality photos. This is the best enthusiastic-level D-SLR on the market today as far as many are concerned.

The Nikon D40 is an affordable, compact, point-and-shoot DSLR following after the D50 while being astonishingly cheaper and with slightly different features. With the D40 Nikon fixed their attention on what really makes a good camera. Features like short shutter lag, a decent viewfinder, and short viewfinder blackout. They did however do-away with some of the not so important features but made up for it by fitting in a range of new features like custom Auto ISO as in the D80.

The Nikon D40 DSLR's high-resolution photo quality is made possible by their "high-performance 6.1-megapixel DX-format CCD imaging sensor" and Nikon's exclusive "image processing engine", insuring superior sharpness and color.

One might say that the largest downfall of the D40 is that it has no internal focus drive motor and and therefore lacks a mechanical focus drive pin. In place of, it just has CPU contacts meaning it only has the ability to auto focus with AF-I and AF-S lenses because they include internal focus motors. The standard lens being the Nikkor 50 mm F1.8D (and the F1.4D) are both manual focus only on the D40.

The Nikon D40 SLR digital camera is an excellent introduction to Nikon SLR digital cameras for the beginning photography enthusiast. It's affordable yet still has many of the quality features made necessary to be part of the Nikon DSLR family.
