I have over fourteen (14) years experience with black hair in several Flint, MI black hair care salons. The Press & Curl hairpressing service is being requested more often now that the Flint hair community (as with other communities with large black hair care needs) is moving toward natural hair styles. Anyone involved in black hair care knows that relaxers are common. Yet, many people want to avoid the chemical treatment every six weeks. People are seeing the press and curl hair service as an increasingly more viable hairstyle option.

I also service ALL hair types. Check out my latest cut below.

Give me a call at 810-449-2943 for an appointment.

The Press and Curl Process

I will get your hair STRAIGHT...including your edges! You will also get instruction on how to make your style last! Call 810-449-2943 for an appointment.

Most black people know the drill for press and curl hair services. Of course, the hair stylist will wash and condition your hair as needed prior to the press & curl hair service. Nina's press and curl service of Flint Michigan is no different. After the hair is conditioned and rinsed, the client's hair will be dried in preparation for the press and curl hair pressing service. Nina's press & curl hair salon service has as its next step sectioning of the hair. As most of us know, the press and curl hair service begins at the base of the neck and uses the hot comb to press small sections of the hair. For most who use a hot comb or a flat iron during a press and curl, at least in the Flint hair salons where I have worked, hair is divided into one inch sections and the hair is pressed one section at a time. A licensed stylist also knows that hair care pressing oil may also be used.

After the complete head of hair has been pressed, the stylist proceeds to curl and style the hair as the client has requested. Hair that has been pressed and curled can hold almost any style that can be held by relaxed hair. A good stylist will integrate the use of hair spray to help hold the style as needed.

If you have decided to have "no more perm", Nina's press and curl service is what you need to maintain your family hair care preferences with style. Nina's hair care in Flint, Michigan believes in frequent moisturizing and conditioning treatments as needed. Nina's specializes in the press and curl hairstyle for any family who wishes to retain natural hair care in Flint, MI.

Pressing Comb And Temperature Control: How Hot Should The Pressing Comb Be?

Andis 38300 High Heat Press Comb

Visit The Pressing Comb Store.

1. Start with pressing comb temperature set on low to medium
2. Identify thickest section of your hair
3 Select a few strands from thickest section
4. Press the few strands you have selected
5. Observe the level of staightness
6. If your desired level of straightness is achieved, keep temperature at that setting and continue pressing your hair
7. If you want straighter hair , turn the heat setting up one notch and press hair strands
8. Repeat until you get the desired level of straightness without burning the hair

Is a 250 degree flat iron hot enough to straighten natural African American hair?

The answer is it depends on the hair. See my comments on how to know when the pressing comb is hot enough. The best advice is to do a strand test. That way you can always align the heat of the comb with the hair type that is being pressed.

With that said, I hardly ever use a flat iron that's less than 400 degrees on kinky, type 4 hair. 250 degrees is often not hot enough.

Do I use pressing oil during my pressing and curl?

How to use pressing oil on hair

Dudleys Creme Press Pressing Oil

Yes, if needed. Here are the gudelines that I follow:

1. I press a test strand WITHOUT pressing oil after I wash, condition and dry hair. If hair is straight enough, I DO NOT add oil
2. If hair is not straight enough, I apply a small amount of Dudley's Creme Press Pressing Oil to each small section of pressed hair prior to pressing
3 I then proceed to press each section after applying pressing oil

How To Protect Black Hair When Exercising

How to protect black hair when exercising

The best thing for hair when exercising is to put it in a ponytail, clip it up or wrap it. This helps to keep hair out of eyes, off the shoulders and out of the way. On this web page, there is a video about how to wrap hair that may be used as a guide.

Once exercise is over, shampoo and condition hair. Apply Mizani Smooth Guard Smoothing Serum. Blow dry the hair. The hair should be straight after blow drying. If you want a straighter look, use flat irons to straighten further.

Shampoo hair no more than every other day to avoide overdrying the hair.

If you are unable to shampoo your hair after exercise, wipe excess sweat from hair and style hair as desired. Try to use little or no heat.

Mizani Thermasmooth Smooth Guard Smoothing Serum 3.4 oz.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR by wearing a satin bonnet!

I stress to all of my clients the importance of keeping the hair protected, particularly while sleeping. Satin bonnets, caps or pillow cases are perfect for protecting hair. The satin allows the hair to slide without breaking. For those with natural hair, this can be very helpful because it also helps to keep the hairstyle neat and in place. Choose from some of the satin bonnets below.
