The Nine Inch Nails Discography

Thanks for visiting the NIN Discography lens!

Nine Inch Nails is a band formed in 1988 by Trent Reznor. Through the years the members of the band have changed, especially for touring purposes. The studio version of Nine Inch Nails have produced a total of six major studio albums, along with about 20 singles and remix releases.

The six studio albums each represent a timeframe of work, in which the singles and remixes are released around. Below are the six major releases.

Pretty Hate Machine, which was not only the first album but also the breakthrough. The release has 10 songs and many of them received wide acceptance, being used in soundtracks on various films, wide radio play, millions of albums sold and a heavy rotation on MTV.

Broken, the sophomore work of NIN. This album received the least attention of all six studio releases. None of the songs on this album really made a big dent in popular media. Record sales were the lowest for this album and very little representation was made on the airwaves. However, for core Nine Inch Nails fans this album is one of the most commonly referenced.

The Downward Spiral, highly accepted as the best work of Trent Reznor. Many fans and critics feel this was the pinnacle of the Nine Inch Nails discography, both in terms of talent and distribution. It certainly is the most widely purchased album from NIN. A 10 year anniversary edition was released in 2004, in a hybrid sacd version and a dual disc format.

The Fragile, which is nothing less than a musical artwork. A double disc release that featured 23 core songs (3 additional songs on various vinyl and special releases) which was too much content for a single disc. Many fans, especially moderate fans that gravitated to more popular music were not impressed with the elaborate work. Most of the songs on the album were not considered very commercial. But critics almost universally agree that the album was a musical masterpiece. The body of work in the album is an amazing sonic experience.

What About The Early Stuff?

In 1994 Hawk Records released a bootleg demo of Pretty Hate Machine. This is not a NIN release. The name of this release is Purest Feeling, and that is also the title of one of the tracks on the album. Most collectors do not see Purest Feeling as a true item, since it was not released by Trent Reznor or Nine Inch Nails.
