In the age of digital cameras, we tend to "snap" away because we know we can delete it if we don't like the picture we just took. No harm in that excet it becomes time consuming and your subject may not be too happy having to continue posing. Or, heaven forbid you miss that perfect action shot. The key is to work at getting it right the first time.

Groups. A key when taking pictures of a group is to be sure to back up from the pictures. You will find that if you leave plenty of "green space" around your team members, or family reunion photos, you can then crop it later and get it eactly the way you want it.

The same is true for "head shots" of someone. When you are trying to take a photo for a business card, or for a biographical sketch for someone, and don't have time to go have it professionally taken, you can still get a photo that looks like you went to a photographer. First be sure your background is completely plain. Any flowers or wall railings, etc. will distract from the subject. Next have them stand away from the wall. You will get a shadow around them, and it will look funny, like a dark crown if you have them plastered against the wall, so have them take a step forward. Then, snap the photo from the waist up, and finally crop the photo to the size you need for your purpose. Both your digital camera or any free program can do this. You can use "Paint" if you are using Windows, and Mac has a free simplified photo editing software with thier package as well.

For action shots you can again stay back from the subject and crop the photo later; however, if you can get closer it is better. The blur will be less. I recommend using the action setting on your digital camera. Even the most of the basic cameras have this setting. It will make the shutter click faster.

Do not take pictures from a moving vehicle. Pull over, but if that is not possible, and you simply must get that vacation shot, roll down the window first. Lift the bottom of the "view finder" up above the blur of the road to snap the photo.

Try to avoid taking too many pictures that have no people in them. Everyone likes to see pictures of thier loved ones. If you are trying to get a beautiful landscape, ask a friend or loved one to step in the picture, unless it will be a photo that someday you will blow up, frame and mount on your wall or something. A few of these are fine, but when I was in high school, and just starting out, I went on vacation and took lots of photos. I have a whole photo album I rarely open because it is just scenery of places I visited. Why didn't I have my family stand in them? That would have been so much nicer.

I'm sure you have noticed in many places when you start to buy a digital camera it tells how high you can go with the dpi. DPI stands for "dots per inch". I will get a little technical before I start to tell you why you should care and what the settings are so that I can fully explain how it works. To make it simple, digital pictures quality go by how many dots are printed for every inch on the print. The higher the number of dots printed, the higher the quality of the picture. Your first thought will be then I'll make all mine as high as I can. The problem with this is it takes a lot of memory to print more dots because there is more data to store. This takes up a lot of space on your camera's SD card, and on your computer. In addition, a high resolution picture can take forever to email as well.

Many cameras will default to 75 dpi so that you can easily manipulate and store them; however, if you are taking pictures that you believe you will one day like to enlarge to an 8"x10" or larger, your pictures will look "grainy" at that size, so you will want to increase the size to at least 600 or better yet 1200 dpi. Like I mentioned though, this will take up a lot of storage room so only use that high of a resolution when needed.

A very nice quality dpi setting is 300. While it takes up a little more room, it allows you to print them at a quality that is still very nice. This will also allow for a great looking picture video to burn to DVD to play on your big screen TV. If you find your storage space running low, simply copy your pictures to either an external hard drive, or 2 DVDs and delete them. The other thing you can do, is simply delete all the photos you know you will never use. Happy picture taking!

If you have a huge mess of digital pictures all under one folder entitled "My Pictures" on your hard drive there is an easy way to organize them that does take a whole lot of time. Then, you will at least get them to a manageable size. You may not be very computer literate, so I'll walk you through this step by step.

Go to "start" and click on "my computer". From there, click on the "pictures" folder. At this point, you may see just all of your pictures randomly inside of this folder. To make it a little easier, click on "view" at the top of the page and arrow down to "details". This will put your pictures in a list with headings. Click on the "date" heading. This will sort your pictures by date for easier manipulation.

If you are using Vista, click on "organize" and "new folder", if not, go to "file" and new folder. Click once on the new folder and type in a date. I like to use the following format as it is easier to read: "2007 June". Now go back to the folder with all your pictures in it, click on the top one once, hold down the "ctrl" key on your computer and click on the bottom picture for that timeframe you selected. Right click on the highlighted photos and click "move" Or "cut". Open up the new file folder, in this case "2007 June" and right click inside the folder and click paste. It will move all of your photos to this sub file.

Continue using this process to get all your pictures organized under dates. You can then save each month to a DVD OR an external hard drive to save your photos in an organized manner.

You can also manage your pictures by subject matter, but I find this more difficult in that there are several subjects in many of your pictures so you either have to save them in several different places, or try to locate them that way.

Using the Media Creater software I mentioned earlier, that software will do all of this for you, but either way, it sure helps to have those photos organized!

I started taking pictures in junior high when my grandma gave me an old "Brownie" camera. It was the kind you had to hold at your chest and look down into the lens to take a picture. From that, I started keeping albums of all my pictures. Later I got 110 (remember those?), and then of course the 35 mm.

I wanted a way to put these pictures to good use, and preserve them, so I figured I should scan some. For Christmas last year, I built a DVD set to music with the pictures I had scanned. This was a Christmas present for my mother. Little did I know what an impact it would make for my whole family. When we put the DVD into the player, everyone started getting closer and closer to the TV so they could see, you hear laughter, and "oh my did I look like that?"..."look at Karen"...haaa..."look at that car I used to have". And so on. I had scanned almost 500 pictures, and put together an hour-long DVD. I burned copies for everyone.

My family members tell me they get this DVD out at least once a month to view it. And, my mom tells me that she plays it almost daily for Grandma. I made another one this Christmas as well, but not so long. This is wonderful because my Grandma passed away in February at the age of 98. I feel good that she enjoyed her days more by being able to watch the DVDs. I of course put together a show for her funeral of her life...a very special lady. I still have a lot more photos I could scan, and now we are starting to add home videos and to these as well as our more recent digital photos.
