This is Why the Nintendo DS Has Such a Long Battery Life.
Travel takes a while. We know it. And the DS, pound for pound, is still lighter and likely to hold your attention far better than taking along a bunch of coloring books, a novel, or even similarly useful electronic equipment like your laptop.
With that in mind, here are the eight best games on the Nintendo DS that are sure to keep you captivated all through your trip!
The 5 Things You Want In a Good Travel Game
- Multiple Save Slots! Your little sister wants to play too, you know...
- Multiplayer! The more DSes in the car, the merrier! (And it also cuts down on fighting over a single cartridge!)
- A REALLY Long Single-Player Mode! You don't want to get tired of this game too quickly, after all... you only have so many with you on the trip!
- Minimal use of Sound! You don't want to know how many times I've been caught blowing my DS... also, if you're traveling with others, it helps to be courteous.
- Replayability! Get bored? Start all over again and do it differently this time!
Need a Nintendo DS?
Buy one from eBay! We recommend getting a DS Lite over a DS... not only do they look cuter, they also have better screen controls and battery life!

We've got a bevy of Mario-centered games that are sure to delight!
New Super Mario Bros!
New Super Mario Bros.
Amazon Price: $32.99 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Really, you can't have a Top Nintendo Games List without Mario showing up SOMEWHERE. The game will take you ages, you'll agonize over finding every coin and all the alternate exits out of a level, and you will love it.
Multiplayer's a little weak, but the rest of it is quite awesome.
Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart DS
Amazon Price: $32.99 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Okay, Mario's going to show up here a few times, let's face it.
Mario Kart is the Killer Game for the DS - Everyone plays it at conventions, and if you're into racing, the multiplayer will keep you glued for ages.
Be warned, though; if racing's not your thing, you'll struggle to make the single-player modes worth it.
Mario Party DS
Mario Party DS
Amazon Price: $27.82 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Okay, MORE Mario?
Yes, more.
Mario Party DS combines the Party Games you already know and love with the DS, which is made for minigames and you know it. Both Single Player and Multiplayer modes will knock your socks off.
Super Princess Peach!
Super Princess Peach
Amazon Price: $101.94 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Let us know when you're done giggling about the "Vibe Wand".
For less experienced players (or those just fed up of dying so damn much), Super Princess Peach has all the colorful worlds and wonder of a classic Mario Game, and less make-me-angry.
Big Fan Of Mario Games?
"We can't talk about Nintendo handhelds without bringing up Pokemon! That'd be sacrilege!"
Pokemon Diamond!
Pokemon - Diamond Version
Amazon Price: $32.99 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Come on, did you NOT expect this to make the list?
A long, meandering Single-Player makes this game worth it. Also, it seems to go easier on the batteries than most of the other games in this list. It's hard to beat the classics, y'know?
Pokemon Pearl!
Pokemon Pearl Version
Amazon Price: $32.99 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Yes, we're covering it twice.
Why? Because you need two cartridges for multiplayer -- let alone if your siblings want to play some Pokemon as well!
Still Not Enough?!
Check out these great offbeat games!
Puzzle Quest!
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
Amazon Price: $80.98 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Phenomenal Single-Player. An engrossing board game. Even Better than the PSP Version!
You'll be glued to your DS the entire trip with this baby!
Elite Beat Agents!
Elite Beat Agents
Amazon Price: $13.33 (as of 12/08/2009)![]()
Okay, so you'll need the sound up for this one. The good news is, half the car won't care!
The game that brought rythym to the Nintendo DS. A Surefire Hit!

I hate GAMES FOR GIRLS -- They're Sexist and Patronizing!

As a feminist and a female gamer, I have a lot of the typical strong opinions you'd expect out of any other gamer - Nintendo is awesome, Jack Thompson is just some glory hound trying to latch onto video games like some blood-sucking tick, and so on....
