The Ultimate Nintendo Nerd and Love For Retro Gaming

Actually, not long ago I was simply a nerd who by great chance was reaquainted with the Nintendo Entertainment System through Wii Virtual Console. I downloaded the classics for five bucks a pop, titles such as the 3 SMB games, both Zelda's, the Castelvania series, Punch-Out, and Excitebike. Now I'm dabbling with the Mega Man series, having beaten the first four and now on number 6. I am holding off marriage and kids until I finally defeat that evil bastard Dr. Wily once and for all. And when I have kids I will engrain in them a hatred for Dr. Wily with such loathing it will be comparable to Star Wars fanboys hatred of the new trilogy. Since I'm spewing hate here I might as well get off my chest that the movie Teen Wolf Too ruined any chance of a third installment. For shame, Jason Bateman.

At one point in my childhood I had owned all of the beforementioned games. Then came Christmas of 1991 and I betrayed my beloved Nintendo of five years for a shiny, fancy Sega Genesis, basically to play one game--EA NHL Hockey. I swapped my trusty gray box, controllers, nearly two dozen games for a system with better graphics, one controller, Sonic the Hedgehog, but lacked the exciting game play of the NES. This lens was created so I can formally apologize to Nintendo. I promise I will never let you go again.

The Beginning of a Retro Gamer and Classic Nintendo Game Collection

Old School Nintendo Games are the Best

type=text

Now that we are on speaking terms again, my precious NES, would you do a favor for me. START RELEASING GAMES ON THE VIRTUAL CONSOLE AGAIN! You started off strong with 11 titles at the end of 2006. 2007 boomed with 46 titles and then the Virtual Console started to bottom out with only 22 titles in 2008, a paltry 6 in 2009, and a nearly non-existent 4 titles through November, 2010. What happened? Of the 798 licensed Nintendo games only 89 are available for Virtual Console. Don't get me wrong, all the classics are there. But there are so many more amazing titles out there such as: Goonies II, Battletoads, TMNT: The Arcade Game, and Contra to name a few. They did release Super C, but sorry, that doesn't cut it, not on my watch. Did you stop releasing VC NES games because I once traded you for a Sega Genesis? Remember, I promised it would not happen again. Just tell me what I need to do to get more NES games on the Virtual Console. I am willing to offer my Wolverine: Origins #1 or carded Empire Strikes Back Darth Vader. I am open to negotiations.

The Nintendo Entertainment System, the Absolute Greatest Video Game Console Ever

type=textWhat this lens was really created for was to have fun reminiscing about Nintendo. Love or rip to shreds my 12 favorite Nintendo games. Watch funny Nintendo videos and old school commercials. Check out the e-Bay auctions at the bottom for single games and lots. You can buy game lots at a pretty reasonable price. And if you feel like it, donate you old Nintendo games to me if you want to give them a good home. I will nurture them well and I'll probably even reimburse you for the shipping. Contact me at nintendonerd78@yahoo.com. Have fun celebrating Nintendo with the Nintendo Nerd, sucka.

NINTENDO NERD'S TOP 12 BEST CLASSIC NINTENDO GAMES EVER

12. PAPERBOY

Who would have thought delievering papers in a video game would be fun? While delivering papers you get to avoid breakdancers, skateboarders, dogs, and don't forget the creepy guy with the jackhammer. It's also fun to throw papers through the windows of non-subscribers. Paperboy was a simple platformer that was just so addicting--I wish I could explain why being a paperboy could be fun in a video game. This game still holds up today because of its simplistic nature and fun gameplay.

11. EXCITEBIKE

Simple game that is very fun to play over and over. You can also design your own custom course, which as a kid, meant designing the most impossible course that nobody could ride five feet without crashing. Now that I own it on virtual console I can actually save the game and keep my well-designed Hell Track. I would love to hear from Nintendo as to why they didn't have a save feature in this game when released in 1985. When Nintendo first came out, Excitebike was always the second game we would play, after squashing goombas in Super Mario Bros. first.

10. R.C. PRO-AM

A million times better than Rad Racer because of weapons, vehicle upgrades, and new third-person viewpoint.

9. BLADES OF STEEL

More realistic than Ice Hockey (which is also fun) and plenty of brawls. My friends and I would try to tie the game on purpose so we could go into a shoot-out. Plus there were bonus games to play between periods. I love you Konami.

8. TMNT: THE ARCADE GAME

I loved this game in the arcade and was a happy nerd at Christmas when Uncle Gary bought it for me instead of the usual leatherman tool or chia pet. At the time these were some of the greatest graphics I had ever seen on Nintendo.

7. BASEBALL STARS

This was the first baseball game where you could create your own team and name your own players. The only bad thing about this game is that sometimes the memory would get erased and your juiced up team that was maxed out on attributes was gone. Not as bad as losing you're saved game on Zelda, but it still sucked. Even if this game wasn't awesome to play, being able to create your own players would've put it in the top 10 anyway.

6. DOUBLE DRAGON

Remember the movie The Wizard? Jimmy scored 50,000 points on Double Dragon in about 39 seconds. My geek squad and I were perplexed by this feat for years to come. This game was tough. I'm still surprised Nintendo had the balls to have the girlfriend punched in the stomach at the beginning of the game.

5. NINJA GAIDEN

Bad-ass game with sweet power-ups. One of my all-time favorite ninja games. The jumps were cool, the slashing and dashing was cool, everything was cool about this game. But insanely hard with all those damn flying birds and bats around.

4. GOONIES II

Awesome 8-bit Cyndi Lauper music and a fun exploring game. You also get to knock out the bad guys with a yo-yo. Only disappointments are no Sloth and characters look nothing like their movie selves. This game would have drove me nuts though if I didn't have maps.

3. LEGEND OF ZELDA

This game was so awesome and addictive even my dad played it religously, thumbing through my Nintendo Powers looking for tips. This game could easily be #1. Maybe in a few years I'll change its ranking. But only if the witches and their stupid wands are removed from my game. I hate them more than those annoying clods on The View.

2. SUPER MARIO BROS. 2

This game makes the list over Super Mario Bros. 3 because it was completely different from the original. Don't get me wrong, I love SMB 3. But SMB 2 had a great cast of villains, you got to throw the little bad guys around, and Luigi could jump 9 million feet in the air. I also loved getting coins to play the slots and earn extra guys.

PS Why has Wart never returned?

1. MIKE TYSON'S PUNCH-OUT

I remember the the day I first beat Mike Tyson. I hadn't played the game in about 5 years but still remembered the code (007-373-5963) and beat him by my third attempt. I called my best friend to tell him the great news but he wouldn't answer the phone while X-Files was on. He did however, congratulate me the following day.

What I love about this game is that each boxer is unique and you need a different strategy with each fight. This game was so awesome I'm considering putting the Mike Tyson code on my tombstone.

This is such a fun lens! I really enjoyed reading it. You have more talents than just being a gamer, that's for sure. *Squid Angel Blessed* and I've added your link to My Squid Angel Wings to be featured in the "Games ยป PC & Video" neighborhood. Didn't realize when stopping here that you received a LOTD honor, so congrats on that too.

And now Nintendo Nerds are running the world. Atari was the first system I played on but frankly I wasn't any good. So I stick with solitaire. Congrats on the LOTD.
