Nintendo Wii - True Interacactive Gaming

The Nintendo Wii is true interactive gaming in a box. Pronounced 'wee' the Nintendo Wii boasts 512MB or internal flash memory along with 2 USB ports and an SD slot for memory expansion. The heart of the system being a graphics chipset from ATI codenamed 'Hollywood' that delivers stunning performance. The real interactivity comes into play through the new controller called the Wii Remote Controller. The remote has sensors, a combination of accelerometers and infrared detection (from an array of LEDs inside the Sensor Bar) to sense its position in 3D space. This allows you to control games by for example moving the remote as you would for a tennis swing or moving the remote in the direction that you want to steer a racing car. The remote senses physical gestures and communicates via the bluetooth wireless back to the console from a distance of up to 4 meters away. The controller also has a force feedback "Rumble" feature and an expansion port for use with accessories, such as the Wii Nunchuck Controller, which adds an analog thumbstick and trigger buttons. An adapter is also available that fits over the Wii's  remote for those who prefer the feel of a traditional controller.

The console was first conceived in 2001 and finally released in late 2006. Being approximately 6 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide and 8.5 inches deep it's roughly the size of 3 dvd cases stacked together. The console can be stacked either horizontally or vertically. The Wii is able to connect to the Internet through its built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi or through a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, players can access the established Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.

The Wii system supports wireless connectivity with the Nintendo DS without any additional accessories. This allows the player to use the Nintendo DS microphone and touchscreen as inputs for Wii games.

The Wii unit connects to the Internet through its built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi or through a USB-to-Ethernet adapter, with both methods allowing players to access the established Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. For the parents of younger users of Wii the console features parental controls, which in effect prohibit younger users from playing games with content considered unsuitable for their age level. The Wii reads the content rating encoded in the game and if this rating is greater than the systems set age level the game will not load. This can be overridden with an override password.

The Nintendo Wii will attract people of all ages whether they are sitting down together in the same room or whether they are on different sides of the globe.

Interesting Tidbits

From the Washington Post - A recent study reported in the Journal of Neuroscience shows regular exercise could boost memory and brainpower in older adults.

Andi Crews is a fitness specialist at Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield, Va., where the average age is 80 and maintaining physical and mental health is more important than ever. I'm surprised what a great workout you get," said Crews. "It really is phenomenal and for a lot of people who maybe aren't able to do the sports they were involved in earlier in their youth due to physical limitations, they can still participate in these sports, which is great.

Rather than heading out into the blazing heat to attempt a round of golf or tennis, residents are lining up for a chance to play the Nintendo Wii with a controller that requires physical interaction.

From the editors at Fortune magazine - They recently dissected the Nintendo Wii controller and revealed an interesting tidbit.

In addition to all of the well known features of the controller, the Wii-mote appears to have a special chip on board which is designed for voice processing applications.

According to Fortune, the so-called "Audio Translator" chip is designed to convert analog speech patterns into a digital data stream (among other things.) However, from what I can tell, it's this chip from ROHM Electronics, which sounds more like it's designed for voice and music output capabilities than for input. As a matter of fact, the chip is designed for use in voice guidance applications such as the speech you hear from GPS navigators.

If it is somehow usable for voice input, it's not clear whether the internal speaker on the Wii-mote could be used as a microphone, or if the chip would require an additional input source. While it doesn't appear that the chip is currently used by any games, I'm guessing we'll see it used in the future.

Publisher Gamecock has revealed that it is working with developer Red Fly to bring Mushroom Men to both Nintendo's Wii and the DS in Autumn 2008.

The 'backyard battlefield' action title promises to utilise all of the respective unique controls of both Nintendo systems, and both parties state that the game will feature "amazing gameplay that draws players into an incredibly lush and treacherous stylized world."

Classic Games

Nintendo is giving video fans a way to access their favorite classic games, all without leaving the comfort of their homes.

Gamers have responded en masse as the library of downloadable game classics continues to grow. The upcoming addition of Zelda II - The Adventure of Link on June 4 marks the 100th classic game available on the Wii channel.

Since going online November 19, owners of Nintendo's hot Wii video games system have downloaded more than 4.7 million classic games from Wii's Virtual Console, a rate of more than 1000 games every hour since launch.

Wii lets players visit the Wii Shop Channel to redeem Wii Points to download classic video games from the original Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super NES and the Nintendo 64, and the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx16 consoles.

These games are nostalgic totems to veteran gamers, and simultaneously, new, easy-to-play entries for younger players. These games demonstrate Nintendo's staying power across generations by letting veteran gamers relive their glory days while their children play them for the first time.

The addition of Zelda II -- The Adventure of Link brings a fourth Legend of Zelda game to the Wii Shop Channel from three classic Nintendo platforms, providing exciting adventures that span the decades. Additional classic games are added to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday.
