General Information onThe Nintendo WiiFit Plus

The Nintendo WiiFit system is a new concept in Computer Gaming in that this computer game is actually designed to be fun for the whole family, but at the same time it gets you fit! The Nintendo team has actually excelled itself on this one. The Nintendo WiiFit plus is based on the concept of the balance board, and the individuals body mass index. First introduced as the WiiFit in August 2008 this game has taken the market by storm. In the past it has been very hard to come by due to an underestimate of market demand. The Nintendo WiiFit Plus system makes a great Christmas or Birthday present for anyone trying to get fit or lose weight.

The system gives you a WiiFit age based on your Body Mass Index and the exercises are graded by levels, you set your personal goals and the Wii logs your progress. It is great fun and you can even get your family and friends involved and run local competitions to see who does best, or worst as you wish.

My wife is  a physiotherapist and she says that providing you follow the instructions, and do not attempt to master all of the levels too quickly, the game is a really good way to exercise and get fit. it is a lot more fun than going to the gym and much cheaper too!

There is only one problem that I can see with this game and that is availability Nintendo seem to have underestimated just how popular it would be and it is selling out fast so if you want to secure your WiiFit plus you will have to act fast! This scarcity has not been helped by the fact that both the NHS (British National Health Service and the US Heart Association have recognized the WiiFit Plus as a genuine exercise product, when used in accordance with Nintendo's instructions.

Understanding the components

Before purchasing your Wii Fit system it is important to understand that it comes in components and there are two products. Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus. The Wii Fit was the original product and the Wii Fit Plus is the new release which has more options and levels to it.

There are five fitness modes :-

Yoga, Strength, Aerobics, Balance, Training Plus

You can even monitor the number of Calories you have burned see screen print above. Since everything is logged for you it is easy to set goals and real weight loss and fitness improvement can be attained. There is a unit called a MET that lets you monitor the effect any exercise is having on you. For example sitting requires 1 MET and hoola hooping 4 METS the same as vigorous walking or a round of golf this value (pre set in the Wii) is used in conjunction with your weight and the time worked at the exercise. This is all done on the system so you do not need to worry about it.

Real fitness freaks may find the exercises easy, however for anyone that is not fit or just wanting to have fun they do actually work and my wife says you need to be careful not to overdo it. The exercises will burn calories and you will get muscle burn if you spend too long playing!

The Balance Board and Console

The Balance board (which is often sold separately but is required) for the Nintendo Wii fit is designed for you to stand on as you play the games or perform the exercise routine that you have opted to do. This can be a bit of a challenge but the system is designed to calibrate itself for your center of gravity and with a bit of practice you will soon get used to using it. There are a lot of helpful videos on You Tube if you want to see it being used.

As well as being able to use the Wii fit plus system for aerobic and strength exercising there a a host of new games specifically designed for the Wii that come along with the system. these can be seen in the accompanying videos.

    I bought the Nintendi Wii Fit for my son and he loved it! Now our entire family uses it and we have so much fun.
