Nipple Rings Are Not a Threat to National Security

Ranked #8,778 in Culture & Society, #178,371 overall

THIS TIME THE TSA HAS GONE TOO FAR

It's bad enough that Transportation Security Administration officers are routinely frisking eight-year-old boys and eighty-five-year-old women with aluminum walkers. Texas resident Mandi Hamlin now claims TSA officers forced her to remove her nipple rings with a pair of pliers before she could board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas. Interestingly, Hamlin's jewelry was not detected on the outbound portion of her trip, nor had it ever set off metal detectors during previous security screenings. The TSA website states that hidden items such as body piercings may require additional screening, but generally these situations are handled by a pat-down or visual inspection. Hamlin offered to display her pierced breasts in private to a female agent, but several other male officers refused to allow her to board her flight unless the jewelry was removed. Hamlin claims she was never given the option of a pat-down. Instead, she was told to go behind a curtain and remove the nipple rings. When one of the rings wouldn't budge, a humiliated and tearful Hamlin told the officers it could not be taken out without pliers. She overheard a growing number of male TSA officers laughing and snickering as she struggled with TSA-supplied pliers to remove the second ring. She was not asked to remove a belly button ring. Hamlin claims she was singled out, and has suffered both public humiliation and physical pain. She is demanding an apology from the TSA, and has hired super-lawyer Gloria Allred to represent her in the matter.

Mandi Hamlin:

I felt surprised, embarrassed, humiliated, scared and angry. This situation was totally out of control. I will not sit quietly. No one deserves to be treated this way.

YOUR TURN!

Should the TSA have forced a woman to remove her nipple rings?

Yes, it was within their rights.

the777group says:

Absolutely! And I'd make her remove her tattoos, as well.

vankelford says:

was the guard color blind or rejected her breast.

blanton1624 says:

Nipple rings? Un-frickin-believable. Yeah, what's the problem. Sounds normal to me. What a fabulous debate topic!!!

Nick says:

If you don't want an incident then don't leave it to chance? Smart people are mocked daily for making stupid mistakes. If you are trying to beat a metal detector with metal on your person then you have wagered your humiliation and be ready to pay for it.

Were the security people childish in handling the matter yes. Do you feel stupid for expecting something better from people that have decided to work by x-ray machines for a living?

Grasshoppa says:

Why not? They force me to take all the change out of my pockets, and I've never seen anyone use loose change to hijack anything.

Surprised, she says? Why would anyone be surprised that she has to remove metal from her person when being screened at an airport? We've been doing this routine for years.

Snickering, humiliation, and all that was completely out of line. These people need to conduct themselves as professionls or go back to flipping burgers somewhere. But that isn't the issue in the above question, and I'm not buying the "I was shocked that they wanted me to remove metal from my person" line of reasoning. Sorry. You know you're wearing metal, you know where you're wearing it, and you know they're going to want to see the metal if they detect it.

No, it was unnecessary.

EllaHalligan says:

Utterly pathetic. These morons think they can get away with anything... and the American public keeps proving them right!

GG says:

It was clearly stated that the matter could have been handled in a number of ways, but they forced her into the worst of them! Completely wrong and completely shameful. Not to mention they laughed and ONLY paid attention to her nipple rings. Downright sickening.

ClassyGals says:

Oh no, that just wasn't right. I hope she sues and wins!

jennysue19 says:

no - an invasion of privacy - so obviously a joke for the security agents concerned

jesse says:

The laughing and snickering, way too far. anyone notice that they only made her take the rings out of her breasts but not the navel. obviously sexual harassment.

lyjusinski says:

TSA should maintain some sort of consistency, but they never seem to, even with little things like whether or not to put your purse in a bin or just on the conveyor belt in security. This was extreme and I don't blame Ms. Hamlin for hiring a lawyer and bringing the matter into the spotlight.

Pukeko says:

I think TSA crossed the line long before this incident.

Duckylurve says:

Oh my GOD no! that sounds like sexual harassment to me!

Beef says:

NO, TSA is yet another government department gone out of control.

good things says:

MEN and WOMEN sould not have to remove any peircings for TSA

sean says:

Unless it has 1-inch spikes, no. That's just ridiculus, Maybe it has an explosive in it!(sarcasm) btw, yes it's in their rights, but what a hassle, those morons.

GanDeeva says:

War against terrorism is becoming a war against everyone, that just plain stupid

poddys says:

I think it was going just a bit too far, but then you keep hearing about incidents with immigration officials doing more than they should. Definitely not a good move on their part.

I do agree though that some people do ask for trouble when travelling, with what they wear and carry and not checking the rules then making a fuss.

Kayleen says:

This is nothing other than Wrong! Nobody should be inflicted with such harassment. I have several piercings and have never had a problem at any airport. If this had happened to me I would have felt angry, humiliated and violated. My body piercings are personal. I'm sure there is not much chance of a terrorist attack where the concealed weapons are nipple rings!

Amanda_Blue says:

NO!!!The treatment of this woman, including the snickering, is unforgiveable. An instance like this, which reminds me of the way that Hillary Clinton has also been singled out for abuse during her campaign for President, shows that the millenia-long prejudice held against women, also known as sexism, is still rampant. Mandi Hamlin is right to fight back. Brava!

Mellowd says:

That is the most ridiculous I have ever heard of! I have body piercings and they have never set off the alarm! I thing some moron just wanted to get his jolly's off watching her take them out! I swear it really ticks me off watching these people use their power in such an unjust way to harass innocent people!!

fefe says:

no. stupid tsa!

rms says:

No way! Once they knew what was setting off the alarm, there was no need for further examination or humiliation.

midtowntrader says:

Heck no! I had a similar problem with my "Prince Albert" and was treated like some sort of deviant.

kab says:

Look, if they offered a "pat-down" then we would have a whole different situation and lawsuit here. Laughing and snickering - okay too far.

Important!

From the TSA Website:

Hidden items such as body piercings may result in your being directed to additional screening for a pat-down inspection. If selected for additional screening, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to the pat-down search.

Gloria Allred and her client, Mandi Hamlin

Gloria Allred:

The conduct of TSA was cruel and unnecessary. The last time that I checked a nipple was not a dangerous weapon.
