Nitrobacter - Nitrobacter bacteria

Ranked #2,371 in Pets & Animals, #61,322 overall

What is the Nitrobacter bacteria?

Let's start off with what isn't Nitrobacter:
1. It isn't a yummy food
2. It isn't a cute furry animal
3. It isn't a toy or something that could bring you a lot of joy
4. It isn't a BIG thing.... it's rather small...
5. It isn't a government conspiracy to end all aquarium life once and for all !!!

...kinda look like gummy worms, don't they?

Nitrobacter in the nitrogen cycle

... think aquarium ...

Nitrobacter bacteria nitrogen cycleNitrobacter bacteria play a major role in the nitrogen cycle, mostly by transforming nitrites into nitrates. Take your aquarium , for example:

When a new aquarium is started, fish waste and uneaten food decomposes to ammonia, which is very harmful for fish.

Theoretically, this is where the Nitrosomonas come in and transform that ammonia into nitrites which ain't a breeze for your fish, because it's also a toxin.

But the last major player in this nitrogen cycle is the Nitrobacter, which takes in those harmful nitrites and converts them to nitrates to which most fish could be considered to be immune.

Hooray!

Keep your aquarium healthy!

blurb...

Products to teach you and keep your aquarium healthy:

Bacterial aquarium balancer - odor free to prevent new tank syndrome and to help eliminate ammonia and nitrate

Gel filter cartridge inoculant - spread directly on to your filter pad or media to immediately establish biological activity to stabilize aquarium environments

Nite-out ii -nitrifying bacteria which is reef, freshwater, and marine water safe specially formulated for rapid ammonia and nitrite reduction

Gravel and substrate cleaner - natural and non caustic reef, freshwater and marine water safe to provide rapid and natural sludge removal

Nitrobacter bacteria facts

Also additional explanation of some terms...

Nitrobacter bacteria imageNitrobacter is a gram-negative bacteria, which means it does not retain a crystal violet dye in the gram staining procedure.

In the gram stain test, a counterstain (mostly safranin) is added after the crystal violet, coloring all gram-negative bacteria to a red or pink color., thus helping to identify two types of bacteria based on their cell walls structural differences.

It is a chemoautotrophic bacteria, meaning it is a bacteria which obtains its energy by the oxidation of electron donors in their environments and, in addition, it synthesizes all organic compounds from carbon dioxide.

Nitrobacter can either be pleomorphic (they can have more than one shape during their life), pear-shaped or rod-shaped.

This bacteria usually reproduces by budding ( a form of asexual reproduction in which a new organism grows on another, remains attached to the parent individual until mature, and is genetically identical to the parent individual - a clone)

Nitrobacter is a genus of bacteria from the Pseudomonadales order.
It has 4 known species (or cousins if you wish) - Nitrobacter alkalicus, Nitrobacter hamburgensis, Nitrobacter vulgaris and Nitrobacter winogradski.

To fulfill their carbon needs, these bacteria use the energy that results from the oxidation of nitrite into nitrate.

They occur in environments where organic matter is being mineralized, such as sea water, fresh water and soil.

I kept an aquarium or two for many years and remember how nitrates and ammonia were harmful, but I really didn't understand about the "good" bacteria until reading your lens. Great information. Blessed by a SquidAngel.

As Homer Simpson would say "oh science" :) We've kept fish for a long time and I knew the basics I never really "knew" what it was all about regarding Nitrates and such. Nicely done.

Very interesting. This would have been useful to know when I had a tank with 3 map turtles in it.
