A Brief Definition of NLP

"Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an incredibly powerful discipline that enables people to unblock the structures of human communication and human excellence. By doing so people can think, communicate and manage themselves, and others, more effectively.

NLP explores the relationships between how we think (neuro), how we communicate (linguistic) and our patterns of behaviour and emotion (programmes).

By studying and learning from these relationships people can effectively transform the way they traditionally think and act, adopting new, far more successful models of human excellence. (This activity is called modelling and is a key feature that distinguishes NLP from psychology).

In effect, NLP is a powerful change management tool that transforms the way people think and act to have the greatest impact both professionally and personally. That's why NLP is one of the most powerful skills used in business management, psychology, sales, sports coaching and all forms of personal development."

If you know little or nothing about NLP - read these four books!

"I want you to find out how you can learn to change your own experience, and get some control over what happens in your brain. Most people are prisoners of their own brains. It's as if they are chained to the last seat of the bus and someone else is driving. I want you to learn how to drive your own bus. If you don't give your brain a little direction, either it will just run randomly on its own, or other people will find ways to run it for you -and they may not always have your best interests in mind. Even if they do, they may get it wrong!"

- from the book Using Your Brain for a Change by Richard Bandler

Unlimited Power : The New Science Of Personal Achievement

This is the first NLP book that I have ever read and I recommend it as a first read for any total NLP newbie. It is extremely entertaining, motivational, and informative. It actually covers a majority of all NLP concepts, albeit in a not overly detailed manner. Unlimited Power is a very good over view of the subject.

Amazon Price: $10.20 (as of 10/13/2008)

An Introduction to NLP

I consider this book the twin of Unlimited Power. It is a lot more technical, a lot less motivational, but more informative. It is an excellent overview as well.

Amazon Price: (as of 10/13/2008)

Nlp: Neuro Linguistic Programming the New Art and Science of Getting What You Want

This is another great introduction to the field of NLP with a heavy emphasis on goal setting and getting.

Amazon Price: $17.64 (as of 10/13/2008)

Thorsons Principles of NLP

If you want review material this is it. It is organized around the basic NLP presuppositions and teaches techniques and concepts using those as a base. I believe that this is really the best way to teach NLP and hope that someone will come up with a more comprehensive book that uses a similar structure.

The Latest from the Greatest!!! - new from Bandler

NLP Meta-Model Language Patterns

"The meta model represents, as far as we (Bostic and Grinder) have been able to determine, the first complete syntactically based language model for an express purpose ever created. The thirteen (or so -- it depends on how you count them) verbal patterns that constitute the meta model are a highly effective verbal model for use in the specific context of therapeutic change.

"They are designed for the express purpose of challenging the limitations in the mental maps carried by clients who seek professional assistance in changing themselves through the processes of therapy. Under the impact of the systematic use of the meta model patterns, clients... expand and/or revise the mental maps that contain the traps, flaws and limitations that prevent them from shifting to more effective and congruent behavior." - John Grinder

The Structure of Magic: A Book About Language and Therapy (Structure of Magic)

It has been said that this was actually Richard Bandler's dissertation. The meta-model is a series of questions that will help you to get to the specifics of a person's experience, yourself included. This is the Bible of the NLP meta-model. It is very deep and heavy stuff that is derived from Noam Chomsky's Transformational Grammar. But it is hard work that will pay off in terms of challenging deletions, distortions, and generalizations in your's and other people's communication.

Amazon Price: $14.93 (as of 10/13/2008)

The Structure of Magic II: A Book About Communication and Change (Book 2)

This book deals with the subjects of congruence and incongruence as well as polarities which in turn was the basis of the NLP "parts model". Family therapy tactics is discussed in great detail.

Amazon Price: $14.93 (as of 10/13/2008)

The ULTIMATE shortcut to NLP mastery!

All of the research in the field of NLP during the past 30 years has led to the creation of dozens of techniques that anyone can use to help cure phobias and fears, set well-formed goals, solve inner conflict, build confidence, become more persuasive, handle adversity, and so on. There is an NLP book that captures many of these techniques and compiles them in one place. It is called The NLP Tool Box. There is so much NLP goodies in this book that I cannot even begin to describe them. The NLP Tool Box may possibly the best NLP book ever written. At the very minimum, it will provide you with more techniques, described and taught in a way that makes the techniques easy to do, than any NLP book that I have ever read. In terms of NLP technique, The NLP Tool Box is literally 10 books in one. I am not the only NLP Practitioner who wishes it were available when I first started. It would have saved me a lot of reading hours. Not to mention seminar dollars that run in the thousands.

NLP Hypnotic Language Patterns

"Hypnotic language patterns are not about hypnosis, because people think traditional hypnosis is about having people close their eyes and go into a trance. What hypnotic language patterns are really about is learning and harnessing the powers of our language. These language patterns are called hypnosis because people learned about them by watching and studying with the master hypnotist Milton Erickson. One day, after they had been modeling all this hypnotic language, one of them asked the other the question, "do you think we can get the same results without hypnosis?" In other words, was there a structure to what Milton did that you could use in normal waking consciousness with wide awake people?

The purpose of these hypnotic language patterns is to induce a state in some one or to change a state. Same as a parable, or a metaphor or a story.

Conversational hypnosis is a powerful form of excellence in human communication used quite naturally and effectively by successful and persuasive professionals in every field of endeavor. It can be adapted for use in many situations, as with Sleight of Mouth patterns." - Eileen Bertie

Trance-Formations: Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis

Trance-Formations is a transcript of a hypnosis seminar that Bandler and Grinder jointly did during their legendary partnership years. The Milton Model, rapport, negative commands, presuppositional languaging, ambiguities. These are all demonstrated in this book.

Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D

NLP Persuasion

The greatest book on persuasion ever written is called "Covert Hypnosis". In his website, it's author, master persuader and body language expert Kevin Hogan leads off by asking:

"Covert hypnosis gives you the scientific breakthrough and ultimate power to control minds, change behaviors and make anyone EAGER to fulfill your every desire... without them ever knowing it!"

Covert Hypnosis basically uses sneaky commands (both verbal and non-verbal) to generate compliance from one's prospects (customers, employees, family members, interviewer, friends, lover, etc.) ethically and without out them consciously being aware of the commands. Covert Hypnosis has got to be the coolest persuasion method out there. Be sure to use it ethically. By this I mean that you must use it to co-achieve win/win outcomes with your prospects. Not win/lose, lose/lose, or lose/win goals. "Win/win or no deal", as Stephen Covey likes to say, is the ONLY way.

The Unfair Advantage: Sell with NLP!

I cannot review this book because I have never read it. But I have included it here because I have never seen a negative review of it.

Amazon Price: $25.74 (as of 10/13/2008)

"Dovetailing", a win/win approach to sales, team building, and negotiating is discussed in a very simple yet profound manner. A lot of NLP basics like rapport, sensory acuity, and others are discussed as well. This is an excellent work on the subject.

NLP Classics

"Any time you sincerely want to make a change, the first thing you must do is to raise your standards. When people ask me what really changed my life eight years ago, I tell them that absolutely the most important thing was changing what I demanded of myself. I wrote down all the things I would no longer accept in my life, all the things I would no longer tolerate, and all the things that I aspired to becoming."

- Anthony Robbins

I'm talking about the six cassette version. The two cassette version obviously does not cover as much.

NLP Therapy

"Knowledge about life is one thing; effective occupation of a place in life, with its dynamic currents passing through your being, is another."
"Success or failure depends more upon attitude than upon capacity successful men act as though they have accomplished or are enjoying something. Soon it becomes a reality. Act, look, feel successful, conduct yourself accordingly, and you will be amazed at the positive results."

- William James

NLP Modelling

"The world is filled with human beings manifesting an endless variety of behaviors and abilities. These human abilities are as diverse as being able to effectively negotiate, tell a joke, empathize with others, manage a large group, compose music, write a book, promptly pay bills, be thrilled by an abstract painting, plan the future, learn from the past, or ease the fears of a child. Every human being is a repository of abilities in which they are an expert, or in our terms, an "exemplar."

Is there a way to transfer the ability of an exemplar to someone who needs and wants that ability? The purpose of modeling is to enable us to answer this question with a "Yes."

The fundamental presupposition of Modeling is: Experience has structure.

Our experiences are comprised of various elements: behavior, emotions, patterns of thinking, and the beliefs or assumptions on which those patterns are based. Differences in experiences are a direct result of differences in how these elements are structured. That is, your behaviors, what you are feeling, what you are thinking, what you are believing, and how all of these elements interact with one another, combine to give rise to your experience at a moment in time. That array of content and relationships constitutes the structure of the experience.

It is within these structures that we find the differences that distinguish someone who is adept at an ability from someone who is not. In modeling, we are "mapping" out the underlying structure of experience that makes it possible for an exemplar to manifest his/her particular ability. If we - or anyone - structure our experience to match that of the exemplar, that structure will enable us to manifest (to a great extent) that same ability.

Modeling, then, is the process of creating useful "maps" (descriptions of the structure of experience) of human abilities." - David Gordon, author Expanding Your World
