HERE'S WHAT I THINK

No Harm Watching Television

I admit I do spend a few hours each day in front of that "idiot box", the television. I have a few favorite programs and I try to tune in at the right time to watch it. Mind you, I am not addicted to it to and my life does not revolve round the television schedule.

I know there are some folks who are totally against even owning a television. Of course some of their arguments are quite valid. That box has some people so glued so to it that you hardly talk to each other any more. It is meals in front of the TV all the time too.

Television Is Not All Evil

History come to life

History ChannelTelevision is very much part of our modern culture. Nearly every home owns one if not two. With cable TV there are more programs to choose from. TV is not all bad and not as evil as some claim. When watched in moderation as in anything, the TV can enhance our lives. The television is not just an entertainment box but with more quality documentaries and educational programs it can be a great learning experience for both young and old.

When I was in school history was one of my least favorite subjects. It was boring and a real chore to learn all those historical dates. Now with the History channel past historical events are brought to life and I really enjoy the way they reenact history. With advances in CGI (Computer Generated Images), it is like watching a movie.

Live TV Coverage Brings The World Together

The world is much smaller with satellite TV

Oscar statutesI think the most significant way television has affected the lives of millions around the world is satellite TV. It has brought the live coverage of events to every living room. The whole world can witness a sporting event, award ceremonies, historical happenings all at the same time. Imagine people of different nations from different time zones all with eyes glued to that rectangle box and awaiting with bated breath for the announcement of the results whatever the occasion.

I experienced the same tension as the many spectators in Melbourne who watched Roger Federer battle it out with Andy Murray for the Australian Open 2010 in tennis. I am sure many of you will be making a quick guess as to who would win the "Picture of the Year" like the glamorously dressed actors and actresses seated at the Academy Awards later on in the year. Though we may not be able to attend in person nevertheless we share the same excitement in our own living rooms.

YOUR TURN!

Do you watch any television or do you think our lives will be richer without it?

sonam says:

Television is not at all bad it keeps informing us about things that happen all around the world and it also improves language ability.

GreatGazoo says:

I think TV is fine and can be a very good thing even for children if used properly,

MarbleousBehavior says:

I really enjoy watching TV at the end of a hard day, or when I'm folding laundry. Not everything I watch is informative, but I do try and encourage my children to be more discerning.

JennyGreene says:

it is a bit of a waste of time, but does bring relaxation

eclecticeducation says:

As long as it is in moderation it can be relaxing and enjoyable.

The-Java-Gal says:

There are rich nuggets of information just waiting to be found on obscure channels. It's up to us to use in moderation. I find inspiration for lenses. I think it can also be used as great conversation starters in family circles.

mistyriver says:

I enjoy watching T.V. to relax, but usually I just watch a couple of shows that are my favorites. If watching it is all you do with your day, then it could be bad, but it is fine in moderation.

lakern26 says:

I agree. Television is not all bad. I've seen many, many enriching and educational programs on TV and have learned quite a bit. As with anything else, too much television can be detrimental. As long as we don't let it consume us, why not enjoy it?

happynutritionist says:

I do watch TV, we like some shows and keeping up with the latest news, and a good movie. But like anything that keeps you sitting (including this computer I'm typing on) unless it is providing creative input (or out-put) it may just be that our lives would be richer in a creative sense without it.

LeanneChesser says:

I say that there's no harm in watching TV in moderation. I do think there's harm when the darn thing is on constantly and people sit and do nothing but watch it. I definitely think that our lives are richer without it in cases where it takes up too much time . . . there are many great things to do besides watch TV!

writernewbie says:

I do watch television, and I think that t.v. has very much become just a natural part of most American households. I don't like getting too consumed with the tube, however. You mentioned that people sometimes eat meals in front of the t.v. This is a habit that my family has developed, and one that I'm not happy about. I think it's still important not to neglect family time, and not to let t.v. become the only source of bonding for a family. I suppose I fall somewhere in the middle on this debate...neither "yay" or "nay".

No way, Monkeybrain!

BarbRad says:

I don't own one, and haven't in the almost 46 years since I've been married. I watch the news when I work out at the gym, and the only time I miss the tube is when the election results are coming in. i can usually manage to watch those somewhere else. There are shows I could probably enjoy, but the commercials turn me off and my husband tends toward TV addiction. We decided when we married not to get a TV because we thought we'd waste too much time if we had one.

My family sits down most evening and watch a show together. Most of the time we watch shows like Little House on the Prairie and Dr. Quinn, so it's a learning experience too. My boys are both hyper so it gives them settle down time before bed and time with us. After our kids are in bed, my husband and I watch ours shows together. It's kinda like having a mini date every evening. No, I do not think some tv is bad at all. Great lens. Blessed by an Angel.
