No, I'm Not Anorexic

I'm Skinny, But I'm Not Anorexic

This is me, I'm 5 ft. 4 in. tall, and I weigh 98 lbs. I've been this size since I was 16. The only time I've ever weighed more than that is when I've been pregnant.

This lens is about my frustration with being asked if I'm Anorexic by everyone and anyone. Even doctors.

First of all, everyone who is skinny is NOT Anorexic. Some of them are, but they usually look like walking skeletons. I do NOT look like a walking skeleton. In our society, it's considered impolite to ask a fat person why they are so fat, so why does everyone think it's okay to ask a skinny person if they're Anorexic? In my case, I just got a lucky break from the gene pool. Skinny women run in my family. I've also got a very high metabolism, I burn food up before it turns into anything. I'm not skinny because I don't eat.

The next time you're tempted to ask a skinny person why they're so skinny, or call them Anorexic, or tell them to eat something, think about it.

Is It Okay?

It is not okay in my opinion. Asking a skinny person if they're Anorexic is just as rude as asking a fat person why they're so fat.

Do You Think It's Okay To Accuse A Skinny Person Of Being Anorexic?

Yes

the777group says:

But only if they're wearing a t-shirt saying "Skinny" - or a more subtle Chinglish one like "boney must winning always"!

mysticmama says:

Definitely!

No

sockii says:

No. It's especially wrong when a complete stranger comes up and makes such an accusation. It's like walking up to a person in a bar and asking them, "Are you an alcoholic?" just because they have a drink in hand. While anorexia is a serious disease, you can't make that accusation of someone you don't know lightly. (And even if you do know a person and are concerned, it's best to tread lightly on the subject.)

survivoryea says:

Definately not! I was always skinny (When I was young) and I could eat all the food I wanted and never gain weight-it would be rude unless you are someone near and dear to the person.

AdrianaCopaceanu says:

Absolutely not! A few years ago, when I was skinnier, one church member told me that I looked as if I just came from Auschwitz. It made me feel very self conscious and I never forgot it.

PopCultureFan says:

It is just plain rude to make assumptions like that. However, if a person saw significant changes in a friend or relative that raised concerns like rapid weight loss or food avoidance, I think it is okay to talk to them about it.

BeyondRoses says:

No, I don't think it's ok, just because someone is thin. Most of my life, I barely weighed 100 pounds. The condition use to not be well known, so it was never suggested that I was anorexic. It was more of a "you're so thin" like a good thing. I remember in my 30's, having a "goal" to weigh 104 :) The most I ever weighed was my latter 40's at 115, then I was quite ill, and lost 25 pounds, down to 90. It was scary, didn't know where it was going to end, so good thing I had some extra pounds. Over time, I regained the weight, and in more recent years, view about 112 as my ideal weight. I'm 5'4" too. I always "burned" food, but not as well, the last few months ...

I always had the same problem up until about a year ago. I think my metabolism has finally slowed down. I used to get hurtful, insensitive comments as well.

I've always tended to the other end of the scale - having to keep my weight down, not up. I admit I can be quite jealous of those who seem able to never gain any weight no matter what they eat, but we all have different metabolisms and can't make judgements calls on the health of people we don't know.

Most of my life, I could eat anything, and I never gained a pound. I tried until, I reached my goal of 104 pounds, and was quite happy with that weight! Now that I have health issues, it would not allow for much loss. I'm still considered thin, but to me, I loved being 104 pounds! As long as your health is fine, thin is great! Notice I don't say skinny :)

You bring up a point that I've often asked myself - why is it okay to talk to thin people about their weight and not okay to talk to a heavier person?? Thanks for bringing this up.

Anytime you want to trade, sister, you let me know! LOL I've been the same weight since high school too. I did lose 60 pounds once but I had to become anorexic to do it and couldn't hold on to it when I got there. The second I ate lunch that day, I gained 3 pounds.
