Which Type of Mutual Fund should you Use?

There are two main types of mutual funds: load funds and no load funds. You can choose from either, but which one should you choose? Don't let this decision get the best of you. A little bit of thought and research will get you the highest return from your mutual fund.

What is the Difference between a Load Fund and a No Load Fund?

If you know anything about mutual funds you know that they can be very beneficial. They save a lot of time and effort because you don't have to research stocks and companies yourself. The confusion comes when you are presented the choice between load and no load funds. Here we will discuss no load vs load mutual funds.

The main difference between these two types of funds is that one charges you a fee and the other doesn't. With a load mutual fund, you are charged a fee to be invested in their mutual fund. For example, if you invest you money in a load fund that makes a 10 percent gain by the end of the year and they charge 2 percent for fees, you would receive 8 percent in return on your investment.

Load mutual funds say they can charge you this fee and still make you more money than no load funds. They claim to have top management choosing their investments that can gain you a higher than average return. It's impossible to say that a fund can always gain you a higher return because the stock market is unpredictable. Don't count on them earning you more money. Often you will still have to pay a fee whether they have an incredible high rate of return or next to nothing.

No load funds charge you no fees. You invest your money and you receive whatever they the return is. They could very likely make just as good of a return as a load fund but because they charge no fee, you get a higher return.

Mutual funds are generally categorized by the level of risk you are taking on. I suggest doing your research with all different kinds of funds and brokerage firms to find one that will get you the most money with the least amount of risk. That is always what you should look for in an investment, low risk, high return.

Should you go with a No Load Fund?

Whether you are a complete beginner investor or are advanced in finance, most likely, going with a no load fund over a load fund will make you more money. Financial experts say time and time again that this is the case.

Paying those fees for the 'extra help and extra earnings' just isn't worth it. Making more with a load fund is not guaranteed. If a fund says they can guarantee you certain earnings, you should steer clear of them just for that reason. The stock market is unpredictable and nobody can every guarantee you a certain return.

If you are going to invest in mutual funds, go with no load mutual funds.
