Green Your Lunchbox - Say No To Plastic

The concern and confusion about the safety of plastic food containers has left many people wondering what alternatives there are available to safely carry their lunches to school and work.

Waste-free, plastic-free lunch containers are non toxic, reusable, eco-friendly, easy to clean and dishwasher safe! The sleek stainless steel designs are also very stylish and practical. Foods never get squished and dividers and multiple layers keep foods separated from each other.

Sturdy, stainless lunch boxes come in a huge assortment of styles and sizes for kids and adults. They are great for work, school, picnics and camping trips. Also great to take along when you go to eat and use as a takeout container for leftovers.

Just say no to plastic forever! You won't miss it, I promise. The new reusable, stainless steel lunch containers like ECOLunchBoxes, LunchBots, To-Go Ware and Klean Kanteen are awesome, totally waste-free and safe for the whole family and the planet. It's now easier than ever to go green and make meals on the go without the use of disposable sandwich and snack bags. And best of all, the eco-friendly products featured here are made with no plastic, so they are non-leaching, BPA and phthalate free.

Going Green Is Contagious

One person can make a difference!

Once you begin to really think about your own impact on the environment, you realize that even the little things matter. Why waste just one paper napkin when you have the option of using cloth instead? I like to think visualize the pile of garbage that my lunch would create if I hadn't packed it in my waste-free lunch kit and then multiply that by a week, a year, a lifetime.

Kick the plastic bag habit. If you are responsible citizen of Earth and want to make lunch, not trash, then a good first step is to eliminate plastic bags. It may not seem like a lot, but disposable snack and sandwich baggies add up when you consider how many lunches just one person eats each year. Need proof? Just visit your child's school lunchroom and see how much waste is collected in one day. Another interesting experiment is to force yourself to carry your trash with you throughout the day instead of throwing in it a trash can. Kids can do this too and even challenge their whole classroom to give it a try. Weigh in at the end of the day or week and see who has the least amount of garbage!

LunchBots make great bento boxes!

LunchBots Duo Container - Orange LidLunchBots containers are awesome to use as a single layer bento lunch box. They are a non toxic, environmentally friendly, durable alternative to plastic, but they are also easy to use and easy to clean. Busy moms and families will definitely appreciate why dishwasher safe products score bonus points when stacked up against the competition.

The size and depth of the Uno and Duo are perfect for kid-sized lunches and bento box meals while the Pico is just right for snacks and toddlers. If you're packing for a heartier eater or an adult-sized lunch, you will probably want to choose the larger Eco container with the green lid or use multiple containers together. I can easily fit two LunchBots containers in my daughter's standard size school lunchbox will room leftover for a drink and reusable utensils.

The LunchBots lids fit snugly, but are surprisingly easy to open, making them very kid-friendly! They do not have any plastic parts or seals, so they are not completely leak proof and shouldn't be use for liquid foods like soup.

I love the attached divider on the Duo and the small snack size Pico containers because it does a great job of keeping foods separated until you're ready to eat. The individual compartments completely eliminate the need for disposable sandwich bags!

The ECOlunchbox is very compact, but highly funtional!

ECOLunchBox ReviewI just got my beautiful new stainless steel, Three-in-One ECOLunchBox and I can tell you that with this box, it was love at first sight! The rectangle 2-tier box is sleek, stylish and wonderfully functional! I bought it for my teenage daughter to carry her lunches to school, but I'm definitely going to order a second one for myself because it's so darn charming.

I feel that I should start by saying that this box is not a great choice for anyone with a big appetite because it is one of the smaller sets I've found. It is, however, perfect for kid-sized lunches or an adult who is interested in packing smaller, portion-controlled meals on-the-go!

The Rectangle Three-in-One ECOlunchbox measures in at about 4 x 5 1/2 inches by 2 3/4 inches high when both tiers are stacked together. The bottom layer is about 1 inch deep while the top is slighter larger at 1 1/2 inches deep. Between the 2 tiers, there is enough for a sandwich, burrito or wrap, plus a side dish, salad, fruits or veggies.

Tip: If you can find the new Artisan FOLDit Flatbread made by Flatout, they fit perfectly inside the rectangle ECOlunchbox! I found them at Target in the bakery section by the wraps. :)

More about that on my blog!

The small container holds about 1/2 cup and is just the right size for sauces, dips and dressings. It would also be great for dried fruit, nuts or bite-size snacks.

The latches are easy to open and close and don't snap little fingers which is another reason that this box is a great choice for younger children.

This lunchbox is very compact, but highly funtional. Of all the stainless steel kits that I brought home for review, this is the only one that my teenage daughter found cool enough to tote to school. Because she attends a small Montessori high school, she does not have a locker and carries all of her supplies with her throughout the day. The ECOlunchboxes' petite size makes it easy to fit inside her backpack and it also ensures that her lunch won't get squished.

To-Go Ware

Stainless steel tiffin style lunch boxes.

  • No plastic!
  • BPA-Free. Phthalate-Free.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • 200, 14/1 grade, food-safe stainless steel.
  • Fair Trade.
  • Great for both cold or hot food.
  • Doubles as cookware. Great for camping.
  • Stacking individual compartments keep different foods separated.
  • Bonus sidekick containers are great for dips and dressings.

To-Go Ware stackable food containers totally rock!

I love the To-Go Ware 3-Tier To Go Kit for my daughters because the small sized, stackable tiers make it easy to pack a lunch for school just like you would with plastic ziploc baggies. The separate containers keep foods from getting mushed together, but with zero waste leftover for the trash can!

The diameter of the 3 tier tiffin is the perfect size for those amazing, kid-friendly, round sandwich thins, hamburger buns and bagels. The other tiers work well for a side salad, fruits, veggies or chips. I've even used the middle tier solely for the purpose of packing a reusable ice pack between the other two layers on warm summer days.

The little Sidekick containers (shown with berries in my photo) holds 1/2 cup, comes with a tight sealing lid and is awesome for dips, dressings and smaller sized snacks like nuts or dried fruit. It can be packed inside one of the larger containers or used separately.

The stackable tiffins do seal together pretty tightly when assembled, but they are not leak proof, so you shouldn't use them for liquid foods like soup or chili.

They are well constructed and very durable. Unlike average metal, tin and aluminum containers, To-Go Ware products are strong and built for years of daily use without showing wear and tear. Yes, they are also easy to clean and dishwasher safe!

I do love the 3 tier lunch box for my daughters because of it's petite size, but it also easily holds enough food for myself or my husband, although, we usually opt for the larger 2 tier for our own lunches because the containers are larger for adult use.

The latches may be hard for younger children to open by themselves, so this may be something to consider when purchasing a lunch box for kids younger than age 5.

Another awesome To-Go Ware feature that I love is that the top tiers have their own latches, so they can be used alone or with the Sidekick when you want to pack a lighter lunch or snack. Totally versatile. Totally awesome!

Plastics That Are NOT Safe For Food
Avoid using plastics #3, 6 and 7 for food and drink containers.
Besides their impact on the environment, they can also be harmful to your health.

Type 3 plastics may leach phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA).

Plastic can leach dangerous chemicals into your food.

Plastic: How safe is that container?
Though the Food and Drug Administration says that plastic food-storage containers and wraps made for home use are safe when used properly, we don't completely agree. Some of these plastics are the subject of a new debate that has researchers, consumer advocates, and folks like us asking questions about possible health risks. And there's growing scientific evidence to justify the concerns.
Photos: Plastic By The Numbers #1-7
Chemists have spun hundreds of kinds of plastics, but most common containers fall in one of seven categories. To help recycling centers sort landfill-bound plastics from those than can find life in new products, the Society of the Plastics Industry developed the numeric system to identify the type of plastic resins used.
Plastics To Avoid
There has been a lot of talk about avoiding plastic containing BPA (bisphenol-A), especially in baby bottles, however not much has been said about all the other types of plastic that are also harmful to your health. Here is a quick summary of the three most harmful types pf plastic to avoid.
Plastic Types, Characteristics Dangers
Life Without Plastic provides advice and real alternatives to plastics. The seven plastic resin codes are each briefly described below to provide a quick snapshot detailing the name of the resin (i.e., the base material of the plastic), typical products it is found in, dangerous chemicals it leaches, and why they are dangerous.

Dr. Oz and his expert guests offer practical steps we can take to protect our daughters.
* Don't microwave food in plastic. Ever.
* Serve hormone-free or organic meat and dairy products.

Save My Oceans
One of the most serious threats to our oceans is plastics pollution. Plastic constitutes approximately 90% of all trash floating on the ocean's surface, with 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile.

The Trash Vortex
The trash vortex is an area the size of Texas in the North Pacific in which an estimated six kilos of plastic for every kilo of natural plankton, along with other slow degrading garbage, swirls slowly around like a clock, choked with dead fish, marine mammals, and birds who get snared.

Join The Blue Movement

Plastics, like diamonds, are forever. Plastic does not biodegrade. Every piece of plastic ever made still exists, much of which has ended up in our oceans creating enormous garbage dumps like the Pacific Trash Vortex. This plastic pollution kills about 1 million marine animals every year and the manufacture of plastics can involve the emission of toxic substances into the atmosphere.

Our plastic usage continues to grow with our disposable habits and careless lifestyles of convenience. At about 185 pounds a year, plastics make up about 11 percent of U.S. household waste and are among the least-recycled items.

I love this lens. I've been interested in Bento for some time, though I haven't taken the plunge. I love all the containers. They are so creative! My oldest is 4 so I think maybe next year we can try it. She has to have everything she can open and take care of herself. Great info!

Ah, a lens after my own heart! So glad to find this, and very well done. Love the video of the woman taking her tiffin into the taqueria.

I haven't had good luck with that. I've been told health codes don't permit us to bring our own reusable containers. As you can see, it slows down the kitchen staff, too, which I'm sure makes it easy for them to cite "health codes" or "management policy," as an excuse to refuse the containers.

Can you think of a good workaround for that--a way to show them they could save money by accepting reusable containers, for example? I haven't come up with a compelling reason to justify the trouble to the serving staff--yet!
