No Squirrels Allowed - Isn't there a squirrel proof birdfeeder right for my yard?

I needed a squirrel proof birdfeeder. You see, I love watching the birds in my backyard enjoying the birdfeeders I put out.  What I DON"T love to watch is the SQUIRRELS in those bird feeders!  yes, they're cute, and they sure can be amusing to watch...but isn't there a way to keep the squirrels out of the BIRD FEEDER?

Yes, they have "squirrel-proof" bird feeders, too!

One of the problems with wanting to put out a bunch of bird feeders is that they tend to attract other animals as well.

These other creatures include chipmunks, squirrels and an assortment of small rodents. Since this is not what you want in your garden you need to find a way to make them not available to this other seed seeking small animals. What you will need for your garden is squirrel proof bird feeders. These feeders will have some type of device that makes it impossible, or nearly so, for the animals to get to the bird seed.

Some bird feeders try to solve this problem by using plastic shields on the sides to keep the seeds in. There are some problems with this method of making squirrel proof bird feeders. The side pieces will keep the squirrel from eating huge piles of seeds. But what they learn to do is to fly at the feeder, knocking a bunch of seeds to the ground as they go. Then, when they fall, moments later, they have a meal waiting for them. Some of the smarter ones get very good at this and learn to take a flying leap that spills large quantities of seeds. If this becomes too much of a problem, there are other alternatives. One is buying a more expensive feeder that has been made squirrel proof by the manufactures.

The other alternative is to do things that will mean the squirrels and other small animals are unable to gain access to the bird feeder. One method is to use a system that will put wire screening around the bird feeder and so prevent small animals and, unfortunately, large birds from getting the food. One other suggested method for making squirrel proof bird feeders is to hang empty plastic pop bottles on a line above the feeder. This can prevent the small animal from being able to get to the feeder and usually results in them falling off the line, where they land just fine, only to try again. Eventually when they are unable to get to the feeder they will give up.

Customer Review
"We are looking for another feeder, so when I got to this page I thought I would tell you why this is the one we're going to purchase.

We got our first `7536' feeder over 10 years and we still like it. For one thing it holds an entire grocery store size bag of sunflower seeds and for another the birds love it. Frequently both sides are filled with our feathered friends while there are others waiting in the tree for their turn. [Thus our interest in another feeder.]

Presently we have Chickadees, Nuthatches, Cardinals, House sparrows, Wrens, Gold finches, the occasional flicker and small woodpecker visiting. When we lived it Texas it was convenient to exclude those pesky, though attractive, jays.

Initially I think (okay--my memories a little faded after a decade!) it did keep the squirrels at bay, but that hasn't been the case for many years. In fact, our local `free-range' squirrel has the glossiest coat you can imagine. But we don't really care as he is so jealous of the feeder that he keeps other intruders away.

The lapse in squirrel-proof-ness is probably due to years of collected grime and dust that clog the springs. That and just the passage of time.

Four Stars. Our feeder is doing just fine after 10 years. I think the other reviewer is wrong in saying that this feeder is available for less money. I think what he has seen is the one sided version of this same feeder. I say this because we have searched around a bit in order to save money."
