FAQ's About Crank

from NARCONON online

  • What is it?
Methamphetamine is a stimulant drug chemically related to amphetamine but with stronger effects on the central nervous system. It is a white, odorless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol. Meth is made of highly volatile, toxic substances (based on such chemical "precursors" as methylamine and amyl amine) that are melded in differing combinations, forming what some have described as a "mix of laundry detergent and lighter fluid.
  • What are the slang terms for this drug?
Street names for the drug include speed, meth, crystal, and crank. Crystallized methamphetamine known as ice, crystal, or glass, is a smokable and more powerful form of the drug.
  • Suiting up for the chemical effects of meth.Police and EMS interveneAnger caused by meth addictionFamilies in pain because of addiction

  • How is it used?
Can either be snorted or injected, or in its crystal form 'ice' smoked in a pipe, and brings on a feeling of exhilaration and a sharpening of focus. Smoking it results in an instantaneous dose of almost pure drug to the brain, giving a huge rush followed by a feeling of euphoria for anything from 2-16 hours.
  • How long do the effects of it last?
The effects of meth can last 6 to 8 hours. After the initial "rush," there is typically a state of high agitation that in some individuals can lead to violent behavior.
  • What are the effects of this drug?
Effects increases arousal in the central nervous system by pumping up levels of two neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine. At low doses, it boosts alertness and blocks hunger and fatigue. At higher doses, it causes exhilaration and euphoria. At very high doses, the effects of meth can cause agitation, paranoia, and bizarre behavior.

Some Statistics

We can make a difference!

Upward Arrow Chart

  • It takes only $1,000 worth of ingredients to make $20,000 worth of meth.
  • The makeshift equipment of an average clandestine lab would fit in a small cardboard box or cooler. Meth labs have been set up in kitchens, bath tubs, sheds, back yards, ice houses and vehicles.
  • More than 85% of meth in the US comes from superlabs in California and Mexico. Mexican drug rings often use safe houses on Indian reservations to facilitate distribution into North Dakota.
  • Small clandestine labs use any of hundred of different recipes to manufacture meth. Because the recipe using anhydrous ammonia was developed by the Germans during WWII, it is called the "Nazi" method of meth production.
  • According to police, the price of a dose of cocaine that would give a user a 20 minute high will buy enough meth to keep a user buzzed for a day or two.
  • More statistics can be found on Shadow of Meth.

American Meth

A History of the Methamphetamine Epidemic in America

American Meth

by Sterling Braswell

It is the backbone of Ritalin and the 'club drugs" Ecstasy, Eve and Cat. According to the DEA statistics, approximately four percent of all Americans have used clandestinely manufactured methamphetamine. In the 1960s and 1970s millions of mainstream Americans used and abused prescription amphetamines; today, anyone with a stovetop, a beaker, and a little know-how can make its derivative, methamphetamine, with chemicals purchased at the hardware store and pharmacy down the street.

It has been several years, but I had a friend and neighbor, Carrie, who we lost to drugs. She left behind a young son and husband. While, I sold that townhouse and moved to another part of town, I still think of her to this day. At her funeral mass, all of the neighborhood was there and many more friends. I don't think she had any idea how many people her life touched -- and how sad we all were to lose her. A remarkable lens.
