Photo: Desk

My Desk

A few years ago my uncle gave me a rather sturdy but hideously ugly little desk. Someone had tried to finish it with a brown streaky varnish. I could see some nice wood underneath so I stripped the whole desk. The top and fronts of the drawers had lovely wood grain so I refinished them with clear polyurethane, the rest of the desk I painted sage green, added new knobs and some hooks for hanging tools.

I'm now quite proud of my little desk and it's a great place to sculpt.

My computer

Since I take all my own photos of my artwork, edit them, run several websites, and run a small business trying to make some money from sales of my artwork the computer is a very important part of my studio.

This is my brand new computer, I just got it in January after my very old and slow but long lived computer died after 8 years. Such a wonderful change to finally have a fast computer with a nice big monitor and plenty of hard drive space.

Storage

I never have enough space

I'm always accumulating materials and tools, and I never seem to have enough room for it all. I try to keep it under control, I have the shelves, storage bins, and desk drawers but I still end up with stuff shoved under my desk and in my bedroom closet.

My Tips for Setting Up a Studio

  1. Storage is everything. I like the little Rubbermaid plastic shoe boxes for keeping little stuff in.
  2. Make it comfortable. Get a chair you like, make sure your work surface is at a good level for you so you don't strain your neck, and make sure there's enough lighting.
  3. Organize by how often you use supplies. Stuff you use frequently should be right at hand, those you use only once in a while can be packed away in a closet or other out of the way place.

Enchanted Whimsies Mobile Sculpting Kit
This was my husband's idea. I had all this time away from home but felt I was not making the best use of that time so he suggested I put together a kit so I could somehow "take it all with me".

in reply to dianaparkerart I wish I could but I don't own the place my parents do so I can't build anything they don't approve. Since I took these photos I've gotten another bookshelf at a yard sale that gives me some more room. Jars are wonderful things, I have quite a collection with everything from paint brushes to beads in them.

I've only a bit of livingroom space for my art studio too. Have you tried building up? Are you able to layer shelving up your walls for more storage? I've been saving clear glass jars with larger openings to put stuff in, like buttons, pencils, broken jewelry, all kinds of stuff. Great job on your studio!
