Attacked
In my day to day workings I get to know about a lot of assault cases. Sometimes it is assault on the elderly. Sometimes on the young. Always with negative result. This made me wonder - can we put a stop to this, even before it happens.
Where it starts
It all starts with you
In a physical assault there are two people. You and the attacker(s). If you remove one of the two, there are no more attack. That sounds easy, but you have no controll over the attacker. No matter who he is or where he comes from, controlling him (or her)is normally out of your hands. You are then left with only one person in that equation you can controll: you.
Over the next few modules I will challenge your thinking. Hoping to give you some understanding of how you can controll that part of the equation without locking yourself in the basement. Thet is reality, you have a life to live and you cant lock yourself away simply to

Start by thinking.
No one can be truly be prepared
You can give yourself a chance.
When in a situation, you don't have time to think. Even your ordinary day to day living sometimes put you onto autopilot. So sit down and think. Do it now; are you comfortable?
So what do you think about? About being attacked? Wait, rewind a little, how did you get there?
The attack did not just happen did it?
For an attack to take place there must be two parties, one to attack and one to be attacked. Other than that there must be a situation that allows the attack. Let me explain it this way: If you were walking down a dark street and an attacker is lurking in the shadows, he has the perfect situation (opportunity). Should you be in the same place at the same time, with the same attacker but you are with a group of friends, the situation changed. His opportunity dissapeared.
So start your thinking with assessing the enviorment you normally move in and thinking why it is safe. Then think about what places would not be that safe and why.
Preventing an attack is the first step to take. Never put yourself in the line of fire.
When you are attacked, do you flee or fight? this is a question you should ask yourself now, not when something happens. Then you have no time to think about it, when the time comes you must know what to do.
Flee to prevent injury, there are no shame in living to tell the tale. When bieng attacked, your first item on the aganda is self preservation. Its human - it will always be.
Thinking prepares you mentally.

Defending yourself.
It does happen, so the best investment you can make is to learn to defend yourself
Being able to defend yourself in the world we live in is not opional, it is a must. This to some of us is a painfull truth. Somehow as the years went along you got out of shape. Now you are faced with a task that seems insurmountable. Having to go to some type of self defence class. It sounds like work.
Not only that, but how do you know if what you learnt will really stand up on the street? Once you convinced yourself that you must do something, how do you know what will work? After looking around a bit you find that Martial arts differ from system to system. Each with its own strenths and weaknesses. In fact you may end up with more questions than answers.
So what do you do then. I asked myself that many times. What If a guy twice my size tries to jump me?
In these enlightened times there is an answer. (Its not run by the way) Before the second world war a Brit called Fairburn worked in the Singapore Police in one of the worst areas of crime ever found. This areahave been stated to be worse than a war zone. The police in this area needed to be able to defend themself against anything of any size and type. Fairburn went ahead and developed an effective self defence system wich can be used by anyone of any age in any shape.
His system were so effective that it were addopted by the Allied forces in World War 2 because it could be trained so easily and even when wounded you coud still use it to defend yourself.
Fairburh himself singled out three tecniques wich, when mastered, can even be used to bring down an armed assailant. These were the openhanded strike, the knifehand strike and the side kick.
