What is Halloween?
Halloween (also spelled 'Halloween') is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints, but is today largely a secular celebration.
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating , wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.
Halloween Costumes as discussed in Wikipedia
A wide variety of costumes can be from Pagan to basic.
Halloween costumes are outfits worn on or around October 31, the day of Halloween. Halloween is a modern-day holiday originating in the Pagan Celtic holiday of Samhain (in Christian times, the eve of All Saints Day). Although popular histories of Halloween claim that the practice goes back to ancient celebrations of Samhain, in fact there is little primary documentation of masking or costuming on Halloween before the twentieth century.[1] Costuming became popular for Halloween parties in America in the early 1900s, as often for adults as for children. The first mass-produced Halloween costumes appeared in stores in the 1930s when trick-or-treating was becoming popular in the United States. What sets Halloween costumes apart from costumes for other celebrations or days of dressing up is that they are often designed to imitate supernatural and scary beings. Costumes are traditionally those of monsters such as vampires, ghosts, skeletons, witches, and devils. There are also costumes of pop culture figures like presidents, or film, television, and cartoon characters. Another popular trend is for women (and in some cases, men) to use Halloween as an excuse to wear particularly revealing costumes, showing off more skin than would be socially acceptable otherwise.
Halloween costume parties generally fall on, or around, 31 October, often falling on the Friday or Saturday prior to Halloween.

Books to read to the children to get them excited.
I have never been a great proponate of Halloween
I would bribe my kids with a meal out and a movie so we didn't have to trick or treat.

The kids would take their clue from me on just wanting to do something fun - and get candy. Part of the bribe was a big bag of candy! One particular year I remember so well. We had supper at McDonalds, went to Wal-Mart to choose our candy for later, and then headed to the movie. "Earnest Scared Stupid" was the choice of the night.
We had the theater to ourselves! Just the four of us in center row seats. The movie started and was going pretty good. All of a sudden I missed my daughter - about 5 at the time. She had gotten scared and when through all the seats to get to the back row of the theater! She wanted the wall at her back so no one could sneak up on her! I sat back there to watch the rest of the movie with her.

- Okay, but you forgot to tell them that it wasn't like we really had anywhere to trick or treat to, either. Not that I really minded, you passed the passion for passing on the dress up to me too. Now lets just hope that the kids don't want me to take them before they go to their dad's this year.
