Repeal Washington DC's Bag Tax

Ranked #38,563 in Culture & Society, #860,860 overall

Tax Background

In January 2010, Washington D.C. instituted a 5 cents per bag tax on both paper and plastic disposable bags. In practice, this means shoppers pay an additional nickel for each bag used to carry their purchases. Four cents of the tax goes to the local government, but the retailer may keep the penny. Citizens who want to avoid paying the tax may do so by declining have their purchases bagged or bringing their own bags. Some retailers even offer a per bag nickel discount to customers who bring their own bags.

No Nickels for Bags

Let's repeal DC's bag tax.

1. It's annoying citizens. Many citizens have already shown their disdain for the bag tax with their actions. CNNmoney.com says major Washington DC retailers like Giant and Safeway report that bag use is down 60%.

2. Bag taxes reduce jobs for bag makers. (In this economy, we need government policies that create jobs rather than destroy them.)

3. The tax is not raising close to its projected revenue. CNNmoney.com reports that the bag tax was supposed to raise $3.6 millions in revenue, yet only $1.3 million has come in.
