What Are The Advantages of Noise Canceling Headphones?

Most headphones block out noise passively through padding on ear cups (over-the ear style) or by blocking the ear canal (ear bud style). This is particularly effective in reducing higher pitches as well as very loud sounds such as a gunshot.

Noise canceling headphones make use of a microphone placed near the ear which identifies interfering background noise and a circuit to generate a new sound wave to cancel out that of the unwanted background noise. Sound volume is not significantly increased thus there is no hieghtened risk of hearing loss. This kind of active noise reduction is effective in reducing low to mid range frequencies common in background noise.

Getting The Best Noise Canceling Headphones: Style

There are several things to consider when shopping for noise canceling headphones. First, buyers need to consider which style of heaphone they want: in-the-ear/earbuds or around-the-ear.

Earbuds tend to offer a smaller, less conspicuous design. Around-the-ear headphones tend to be preferred by those who don't like the feel of an object in their ear.

Getting The Best Noise Canceling Headphones: Specifications

Obviously some noise canceling headphones are more effective than others. Luckily for consumers, such products provide technical information that indicates their effectiveness. For instance, some may report a 70% rate of effectiveness and others might be as high as 90%.

Checking out the specifications is important. However, putting on the headphones is also a critical step; for that reason going to the store and putting them on to experience their performance is a good idea. Then, to find the best bargain, coming back to buy online is a good final step!

I could definitely use some of these for airplane rides. I've always been a fan of full headphones rather than tiny earbuds. Squid Angel blessed.

I just bought a bargain pair of JVC's in the sales, but I don't think they're as good as the ones here...but more comfortable than the ear buds. Great Lens :)

I've been thinking about getting some too, but I'm a little worried that they'll make me ill since I'm prone to vertigo. I should definately go and try some out to see.
