How Do Noise Canceling Headphones Work?

Noise cancelling headphones comes either in active or passive types. Passive noise cancellation basically means blocking out sound by the way of insulation. It muffle external sound to lessen the interference with music or recorded speech. Active noise canceling headphones electronically decrease external sound to produce a quiet listening environment.

Passive noise cancellation
Passive noise canceling utilizes the natural muffling characteristics provided by circum-aural headphones. This design is shaped like a cup with the rim surrounding your ear. The rim is made of high-density foam and sound dampening material. It is soft and creates an acoustic seal that blocks up to 20 decibels of noise.

Active noise cancellation
Active noise canceling headphones can produce 20 decibels more noise reduction than passive noise canceling headphones. It takes advantage of the circum-aural sound dampening design of passive noise cancellation and uses phase canceling technology.

of noise cancelling headphones

  • When switched on, they block certain sounds which makes it much easier to listen to soft music.
  • Some headphones actually have three noise-cancelling options instead of two which means on, off and mid (which of coarse stands for in between).
  • If you are one of those people that like to listen to your music and not get disturbed by people trying to talk to you then this type of headphones are the kind for you.
  • If you are trying to go to sleep on a plane and the noise of the plain is disturbing you, you can put the noise-cancellation on and put your music on low, which should make the noise of the airplane less noticeable.
