What to choose?

There's a new medispa in our area and they have ads on constantly. I've heard about liposuction before, but the latest things seem to be mesotherapy and lipodissolve or "bodysculpting."  I decided to look in to the new procedures to compare and to see what the buzz was all about.

I don't think people know all their options. If they did, I don't think as many would be paying an arm and a leg for surgeries and reduction procedures.

I know some people disagree with others changing their bodies the easy way. They believe removing fat & cellulite should be done with diet and exercise. I absolutely agree that people should eat well and exercise.
Let's be honest though, some people can't do the exercises they need to in order to make the improvements they want. Even those physically capable might not be fitness buffs or lifetime dieters. Some just can't stick to a weekly regimen. So people use short cuts. They might as well pick a good one.

.

The choices....

There are a variety of treatments and they go by different names depending on the spa:
Some treatments used to to eliminate cellulite, promote weight loss, provide anti-aging benefits, and eliminate localized fat deposits are:
Mesotherapy, lipodissove, liposuction, velasmooth, bodysculpting

I'm not an expert by any means, but I tried to get the basics.

The first site I looked at said mesotherapy and lipodissolve shouldn't be confused with each other. But on other sites, they used both names to refer to the same procedure. After reading through a number of descriptions, I really don't see much difference. The only thing that seems to distinguish the two procedures is what they inject into you.

One description said one is a use of the other:
- Lipodissolve is an innovative application of mesotherapy that specifically targets localized fat and cellulite deposits.

Lipodissolve

Lipodissolve is a non surgical treatment that destroys fat cells. I did not find anywhere that says it removes fat cells.

Lipotherapy, pioneered by Dr. Patricia Rittes treats fat deposits such as "saddle-bags," "love handles," jowls, eye-pads, stomach or "pot-belly," inner-outer thighs, bra-lines, etc.

Lipodissolve is the trade name given to a process called injection lipolysis - a term doctors use for getting rid of body fat by injecting a chemical under the skin and around the fat cells.

It dissolves small to medium unwanted fat deposits that are not affected by diet or exercise. Lipo Dissolve Treatments are nonsurgical.

Phosphatidlycholine (PPC), a soy lecithin substance, is the chemical compound found in our cell membranes. Using very thin needles, the PPC is injected directly into the subcutaneous layer of the skin. The fat which is released is then naturally and permanently metabolized by the body (dissolved). The body circumference in this region is measurably reduced.
PPC has been used for fat removal by physicians for several years now as a non invasive alternative to surgical procedures such as liposuction.

Persons with a BMI over 30 may not be considered candidates for treatment.

Side effects may include: lumps, bruising, and skin tenderness at the sites of injection, but these generally go away within a few days

After Lipodissove, showers rather than baths are recommended, and patients should not sit in a hot tub or sauna for the first week after treatment.
Patients also should not expose the treated area to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time for four to six weeks after treatment. Patients must use zinc oxide or cover the treated area with light colored fabric for up to twelve months following the procedure.
Results are usually seen six to twelve weeks after a series of injections.

One site suggested as a rule, 6 treatments in intervals of 2-4 weeks are necessary to successfully complete the treatment.
Another suggested one to three treatment sessions spaced about six weeks apart.
The average prices per treatment area are as follows*:

Stomach $300-$800
Thighs $400-$700
Arms $300-$600
Back $300-$800
Chin $300-$500
Under eyes $150-$400

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a revolutionary non-surgical cellulite treatment.

Mesotherapy uses a mixture of substances including vitamins, herbs, and other medications injected either into the skin or subcutaneous tissues to treat a variety of conditions

Based on individual requirements, the doctor selects a formula consisting of several medications that block alpha receptors and stimulate the beta receptors. Once injected into the skin, the formula slowly diffuses into the fat, and breaks it down. The number of weight loss and body sculpting treatments required varies from person to person.

Side Effects: Burning that can last 15-20 minutes.
Minor swelling that can last 1-5 days (this can vary with some patients).
Minor soreness that can last several days.
Minor skin discoloration, which resolves on its own, or can be treated with chemical peels to remove it quickly.
A slight risk of infection (which may occur whenever an injection is administered).

Before and after http://www.mesotherapy-cosmetic.com/before_after_photos.html

Liposuction focuses on removing fat cells from given areas of the body, Mesotherapy functions to mobilize the fat from the fat cells and then to excrete them.

Costs vary by region and facility but typically range from $350-700 per treatment around the country

Treatments of 25 to 100 injections are generally given once a week over a period of 4 - 10 weeks.

Liposuction

Liposuction is the surgical removal of pockets of fat to contour an area of the body. It is performed under local or general anesthesia. A tube is inserted through an incision in the skin and fat cells are suctioned out. Intravenous fluids are given to replace bodily fluids lost during the treatment. Liposuction carries risks for anyone with medical problems such as diabetes, heart or lung disease or poor circulation. It cab be done in one session.

Side Effects: It is common to have significant bruising and discomfort. Patients must plan to be home for at least 2 weeks after the treatment is performed.

After Liposuction the patient risks fat deposits in areas of the body that were not problems before the procedure. For example, a patient who had liposuction done on the hips and buttocks may gain weight afterwards on the back or shoulders. This is not seen with Mesotherapy.

The area treated may have a lumpy appearance after surgery. Mesotherapy leaves the skin smooth. Mesotherapy is commonly used after liposuction to correct the irregularities left after liposuction.

Liposuction makes cellulite worse.

Costs for liposuction were broken down by body parts.
The ranges are the lower and higher approximate fees.
Abdomen upper & lower $3,000 to $7,500
Hips/Waist $1,600 to $5,000

Ultimate Body Applicator & Defining Gel

The Ultimate Body Applicator and Defining Gel are non-invasive spa-like treatments and can be applied by the person wanting to lose fat at home.
(In the past, the formula was only available from certified massage therapists - now the application system is designed for general use)

The Ultimate Body Applicator is an 11" x 22" cloth covered with gel. Defining Gel is a half-strength version of what is on the cloth.

The gel ingredients are all natural and include horse chestnut, rosemary oil, ivy extra, seawed extract, and menthol. (a full list can be found on the package and website)

The products are easily applied. The applicator is taken out of the package, unfolded and applied to the area to be reduced or toned - no mixing required. The cloth is covered so it stays in place and to keep gel off clothes either by wearing tight clothes like spandex or wrapping an ace bandage or plastic wrap over it. There are no restictions of movement while wearing the applicator, but you should not it if you are going to be sweating. Sweating prevents absorbtion.

The applicator is worn for a minimum of 45 minutes, but can be worn overnight for ease of use.
Each applicator is worn only once and continues to work over 72 hours. The defining gel is applied once to twice daily when no applicator is being worn.

The gel is absorbed into the skin and targets the fat cells, metabolizing them into energy. This releases and removes toxins and inflammation from the body.

The person treating themselves must drink a lot of water in order to flush the waste out of their system
so it is not reabsorbed. (Experts say you should normally drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces a day.)

No side-effects have been seen. Of course, there can be a reaction if there is a specific allergy to an ingredient.

There are a few additional suggestions, for example, if the stomach is one of several areas to be treated, it should be treated first.
No downtime is needed.
The application does not cause loose skin. The gel tightens and tones while reducing fat. It works for people of any size and on both fat and cellulite.

Costs for the Defining Gel is $38 or $69
Body Applicators are $49 or $89 for a pack of 4

It's generally a 30 to 90 day makeover using one bottle of gel and 1 to 2 packs of applicators a month.

Very Quick Compare

Lipodissolve and mesotherapy (I'll refer to it as bodysculpting) involve injections that break down fat cells. They do not remove fat cells.
The only difference I see between the two is what is injected.
I do not know anyone who has had this done.

Liposuction is a surgical and invasive procedure that removes fat cells.
I talked to someone who had liposuction done on her legs. She said she would never do it again and wouldn't have if she'd known what her after effects would be. Her legs were bruised black. She had a tummy tuck too, and said that was fine.

The Ultimate Body Applicator is a topical treatment that breaks down fat cells.
I have done this and know others that have as well. We've all had great results, whether we were trying to tone up or lose weight. Several of us joined the company, because we were so impressed.

Bodysculpting - no downtime, some restrictions
Liposuction - at least two weeks downtime
Ultimate Body Applicator - no downtime, no restrictions

Bodysculpting - $1,400 - $7,000
Liposuction - $1,600 to $7,500
Ultimate Body Applicator/Gel (3 months)- $261 - $408

That's the basics as I understand them. I listed my sources so you can read more if you like.

Other things you can do...

My husband does Body for Life and it has worked well for him. The diet is reasonable, and similiar to the DASH diet Drs. suggest for high blood pressure. You get a cheat day during the week, so you're not depriving yourself of everything you like.
He also does the workouts.

I like the Vedrey 15 minute/30 workout. It's easy to start no matter what shape you're in. You don't need special equipment to start and you can't use the "I don't have time excuse" since it only takes 15 minutes a day.
