All Natural Sweeteners

Several existing lenses demonstrate the harmfulness of refined sugars and artificial sugar substitutes. Here are some examples of nature's own pantry with healthful alternatives for everyone's sweet tooth, even diabetic sweeteners.

Find info on agave nectar, maple syrup, stevia, barley malt syrup, brown rice syrup, and honey. Agave nectar is the overall best natural sweetener, today. Due to its low glycemic index rating, agave nectar is considered a wonderful diabetic sweetener, although everyone could benefit greatly from a sweetener that does not cause a sugar rush.

Sweet is good, Sugar - but no more refined sugar, Baby!

Agave Nectar

Unflavored, or flavored as in AGASWEET

The juice from the pineapple-shaped core of the mature agave plant is 1.4 times sweeter than sugar. It has a low glycemic index rating, which means it absorbs slowly into the blood stream and won't cause a "sugar rush".

Agave nectar retains its sweetening power in cooking and baking, and it will not crystallize. No refrigeration is necessary.

Please see my AGASWEET lense or my web site for full info.

Agasweet homepage

Barley Malt Syrup

Made from cereal grains; mainly maltose, about half as sweet as sugar. Because it is less sweet, there is a danger of using too much.

65% maltose
30% complex carbohydrates
3% protein

Maple Syrup

Made from the sap of maple trees; 60% sucrose plus invert sugars. High in potassium and calcium.

Good quality maple syrup is expensive, but cheaper brands (or imitations) might do the body more harm than good through the use of undesirable production methods.

Date Sugar

Made from ground, dehydrated dates. Use in combination with other sweeteners. It burns easily. Sucrose, glucose, fructose, complex carbohydrates..

Honey

The bees did it! Fructose, glucose, sucrose - 20% to 60% sweeter than sugar. Has a slightly higher glycemic index rating than agave nectar. Very beneficial in many ways to many people.

Stevia

Great product! 8-300 times sweeter than sugar with 0 calories. Comes in whole leaf, powdered or liquid forms. Highly nutritious! Check out SteviaInfo.com

Brown Rice Syrup

Made from brown rice and various enzymes. Maltose, glucose, complex carbohydrates; half as sweet as sugar.

We've been sugar-free for several months now. I never knew how sugar contributed to being in a state of constant craving until I quit using it. We actually quit to support our young daughter in doing so who was literally possessed by what we now call 'the sugar demon'. Poor kid was crying all the time because she was in sugar withdrawal. Her teacher noted such a dramatic difference without sugar that she added it to the list of "never to gives" on her school file. Life is much sweeter off sugar! I added it to http://www.squidoo.com/karmasstory as well. Love and thanks, Darcie

Funny thing about all those agave nectar sweeteners I got -- hubby was using 2 of them, but switched to another brand of sweetener. So, I put them in the pantry. Next thing I see, they are back on the kitchen counter. Mars sighting! xoxoxo

I eat too much refined sugar and so do the kids today. You would be surprised at the number of high school kids that eat lunch at the snack machines rather than in the lunch room.
    Very informative lens.
