Nomsa: Open Hearts on a Mission

Nomsa [pronounced "nohm-suh"] is a Swati word meaning, "Open Heart"
We started as a group of friends connecting with broken people.

From our website

-------

As so many beautiful things in life, Nomsa began with a simple dialogue... friends wondering together - if Jesus walked the earth today, with whom He'd spend His days. That conversation sparked many more, and, most importantly, led them to who they needed to spend their days (and nights) with.

So began the epic journey: they started taking peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the homeless of downtown Orlando, and it wasn't long before they made friends and a habit of these wandering meals.

Meanwhile, the same conversation led one young woman across the globe to Africa, to serve as a missionary for six months. And the adventure continued...

While working with AIDS patients in Swaziland, some of the children gave her an African name, which she easily embraced assuming certainly it must mean 'white girl' or 'clumsy' or something equally embarrassing. Claiming it as her own, she proudly introduced herself as 'Nomsa', happy to know she was accepted. All the while, hoping the love she knew so well was crossing the cultural divide.

One day, after months of introducing herself as such, she introduced herself to a well-educated interpreter, who spoke perfect English. Upon introduction, he immediately asked if she knew the meaning of this name. She laughed, telling him what she assumed. He responded, "There's no English word for it, literally translated, it means 'Open Heart.'"

Nomsa: A community of broken people

It starts with you and me becoming us

Nomsa was started with the goal of bringing people together. Connecting people to each other has proven to be the most powerful way to break the cycle of homelessness.

Our programs have accountability, sustainability, and community built right in. Everything we do starts with "hanging out" and getting to be in each other's lives. This leads to starting the journey towards restoration and the end of homelessness.

Nomsa works with the homeless but also works to create awareness about the reality of homeless in America. Many rumors, myths, and other un-truths surround homelessness and we aim to clear the air with a heavy dose of what it's like to fall into homelessness, to struggle in the quicksand of career homelessness, and what it takes to end the cycle.

Nomsa is about people. Nomsa is you and me, living with each other in constructive ways.

Nomsa: The Journey

An awareness project to discover homelessness in America

Nomsa has a huge vision: holistic sustainable life change that will help end involuntary and perpetual homelessness in America.

If that is to happen, there must be awareness.

We must seek to better understand this problem ourselves, understanding and embracing the brokenness behind homelessness, and then invite others to do the same.

We must tell the stories. Figures and statistics do not tell stories. Behind every statistic, every number is a name, a face, and a story. We want to hear and know those stories, and we especially want to share them.
With these stories, we hope to awaken America to the reality of this problem.

With this desire heavy on our hearts, we are planning a project for 2009:
The Journey.

A small team - consisting of Nomsa staff as well as a few talented, creative minds and friends with hearts heavy for this cause - will begin in Orlando and make our way across America, living this homelessness we've only witnessed up to now.

Very cool charity! Impressive balance between longer- (working to end homelessness) and shorter-term goals (building community with and among the homeless). Glad to see this group on the Squidoo roster. 5*****
