Gifts, Toys, Games & Activities for Children that Nurture a Child's Mind, Body & Spirit

Want your child to play with or to do something other than play a virtual golf game on Wii?  Or play something other than x-Box?  Or learn how to relate to people in a real face-to-face way rather than text-messaging?  Or actually be present rather than tuning-out with an iPod?

Well, the training begins at home.  And, the training begins with playing!

And who establishes the playing?  YOU!

Want help in how to do that?  You've come to the Right Place.

50+ Gifts for Children - All Selected by Me

Yep.

Only personal highly-recommended games and activities on this Squidoo lens. [I spent hours going over my kids' non-electronic toys and games, and locating them, and then finding even more that come highly recommended!]

All personal recommendations!

Of course, you might actually have to play with your child with some of these Gifts, but that would be a gift in itself because it would provide you with some great long-treasured memories!

Bratz -free and Wii -free

Are you wondering about the same Bratz & Wii things I do?

Bratz - free: Do you ever wonder why parents try so hard to raise kids with good moral and ethical character, kind and loving kids, creative and productive kids . . . and then buy "Bratz" for their kids? Sometimes, I just don't get it.

Wii - free: Somewhere I keep expecting the continual reports on obesity in children and anti-depression drugs for children to be in a back-to-back news report on the increased use of Wii games. Does anyone want their kids to ever play a REAL game of baseball or golf ever again?

[If you thought that was a "soap-box," you should see the size and length of the average "soap-box" in my family!]

So, if you've ever wondered about this same stuff, you're looking in the right place for Gift ideas for your children or grandchildren!

Shut the Box

Okay, this is my new favorite game, "Shut the Box." Why? Because it's equally challenging and fun to play for ALL ages. It's a little luck and a little strategy - WITH THE BONUS of having kids practice addition (or multiplication or subtraction) without them even realizing it!

Oh my gosh, what could be better than that?

Well, there's more! Shut the Box is very portable and easy to play anywhere. Soooo, we take it to restaurants with us and play it while we're waiting for dinner! No more endless mantras of, "When will the food be here?" Time flies when you're beatin' your parents us in Shut the Box!

THE 5 BEST Science Gifts for Children

The Web is filled with gifts that try to teach children about science. There's only one problem with those gifts - kids (actually all of us) tend to resist being "taught."

BUT we do love being curious and following an interesting, intriguing journey of discover. In the end, we always learn something - but what motivates us to start the journey (or, in kids' lingo - what makes us open a box when we're "bored") - is our curiousity and a promise of fun.

These chidren's gifts about science offer your children the very curiousity and fun they crave! Go ahead, make your kid's day!

Klutz for Girls (ages apx 6 to apx 13)

(The usual age range for these would be 7 - 12, but some 6 year-olds and some 13 year-olds still dig it!)

Chinese Jump Rope
and
Cat's Cradle

Every girl's gotta have 'em.

If your daughter or granddaughter doesn't have these at home, get them for her ASAP!
If you're a Dad or a Grandfather, and have absolutely no clue what these are, don't worry, just get them. Hey, they're games that don't involve boys, so, what could be better?! :)

BTW, get the Klutz brand. Klutz is EXCELLENT at making a quality product, with colorful pictures and great instructions that every kid loves.

(FYI, Chinese Jump Rope you play with 3 or more girls total, and Cat's Cradle you play with 2 or more girls total.)

And, these two items are as necessary to 8 year old girlhood as sidewalk chalk is to 4 and 5 year olds.

Sewing - get your child a good start!

Let them learn to love sewing - even if you don't know how! There's tons of do-it-yourself and learn-it-yourself kits, there's quilting kits, and there's definitely a sewing or quilting class near you at a local quilt store or crafts store.

Remember, "busy hands" calm a busy mind. Meaning please? That if your daughter's (or son's) hands are busy creating or crafting, then he/she is less likely to get caught up in the gossipping, comparing, and social-and-hormonal-ravages of pre-teen and teenagism. In other words, they have a better chance of escaping the "it's all about me" and "what do other people think about me" vice of junior h.s. and high school.

Just think, maybe your child will like it so much that he/she makes a quilt to donate to a charity like the Project Linus quilt and blanket program.
Loading

Sewing Machines

Just get a basic, good quality machine. Stay away from "sergers," and your child really just needs a zig-zag stitch (which comes standard with every machine today), and really doesn't need any fancy embroidery. Let his/her imagination with colors and fabric take over (rather than the fancy computerized stitches!).
Loading

Fabric, Fabric, Fabric

Get good quality 100% cotton fabric for your child to start sewing.

I've put packages of fat quarters here because most simple and starter quilt patterns use "fat quarters" these days. But, if your child already quilts, eBay is a great place to find bags and bags of scraps - of any size & shape. I've done a 2000-piece quilt with 2" scraps that I (in part) got from eBay - at a very inexpensive price.

Also, eBay is great for finding good quality quilt fabric - because quilt store owners often sell their fabric online through eBay. So, if you see a seller who says "pet-free, smoke-free, pre-ironed, and/or pre-washed and pressed," you know you're in good hands!

10 to 20 fat quarters should be plenty for a lap-size starter quilt. Quilt for a baby doll? 1 - 3 fat quarters will do!
Loading

Scrabble

Can you use all 7 tiles on triple word score? Would your child have any idea what I'm talking about? If not, get Scrabble, creative problem solving, verbal-puzzle-making, connecting multiple ideas simultaneously ... sound like things you'd like your child to learn at school - how 'bout having him/her learn it around the kitchen table playing a game, Scrabble? Wouldn't that be great?!

Already have Scrabble? If you're missing pieces, or it's time to upgrade or time for something different, get it here:

My Current Favorite Quote

[Pass it on to your kids!]

Do What You Can,
Where You Are,
With What You Have!

- Teddy Roosevelt

Give the Gift of an Unforgettable Experience

Nurturing, Laugh-filled, bonding experiences are what we all crave - no matter what age we are. So, buy a few things from the above lists, but be sure to augment those "things" with some "experiences." Here are a few ideas to get you going.

As the commercial says, it's "priceless!"

Get more Unforgettable Christmas Gifts (for the person who has everything) here.

Sport Events

Give your child 2 tickets to, say, Fenway Park, to watch the Red Sox battle the Yankees, or your favorite hockey team play in February, or the WNBA, or your local college team (heck I much prefer college hockey & basketball to the pros!).0 points

A Creative Class

My local quilt shop has a 1 week class for kids age 8 - 12 years old, where they get their own sewing machine and make their own quilt. What an awesome experience! And, doing it with someone other than a parent means . . . you've now introduced them to a mentor! A kid can never have too many mentors!

Maybe for you, it might be a cooking or pottery class at the local YMCA, or a ceramics-painting class at the local "paint-me-yours" type ceramic studio.

Whatever it is, get them creating in...0 points

Volunteer Event

Kids don't need to know how much, if anything, you paid for the gift. The gift of a group volunteer or "service" project is a lifetime-memory gift to a child.

Give your child a card maybe with a picture of the people you'll be helping - Ringing a Salvation Army Red Kettle Bell, or Serving at a Food Kitchen, or Helping at the Special Olympics, or Driving for Meals on Wheels.

Or, it could be the picture of an orphan in Uganda that you've sponsored and rescued from despair, poverty and slavery....0 points

Camping/Canoeing/Rafting/Hiking

Reserve a campground now for the Spring. Plan a trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains, or the Appalachian Trail, or your area's equivalent.

Or, plan a trip to a cavern.

Or, rafting down a river.

A group event in the out-of-doors, priceless.0 points

Winter Sports

Lift tickets to your child's favorite slope.
Or, how 'bout just a day of family tubing (for those of us who avoid skis)!
Or, use a picture of cross-country skis in the card - because (almost) anyone can cross-country ski and the rentals are inexpensive!0 points

Museum Visit/Show/Play/Zoo

And, don't get a "lecturing" type of museum, or a play with a "message." Something cool - Museum of Natural History, the local Children's Museum, THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS (they always tend to tour this area in February), tickets to a concert, to the zoo. Just have fun - they'll figure out the message 10 years from now, but you'll have to wait an additional 10 years before they'll thank you for it.0 points

Kids' Banks

Kids love banks.
Parents (and grandparents) love banks that teach financial wisdom.
These banks serve both goals: they're cute and they have 3 or 4 parts - so that your children will more easily learn to divide their money amongst:

- Saving/Investing
- Spending
- Tithing/Donating/Giving
- Saving for special gifts/long-term spending

BOOKS - for kids grades 2, 3, 4 & 5 - Magic Tree House

Magic Tree House books are perfect for kids who are just coming into the joy of fluent reading.

The words and sentence structure are simple, but not the baby-easy that these readers just go done learning with (like "see doggy run"). AND, the kids really enjoy the characters (Jack and Annie - siblings who are about the same age as the reader) - and the adventure (any event in history).

Your reader might be linear and read them in order, or more adventurous and read whichever one strikes his/her fancy! The author's done a good job allowing each story to be independent without needing to read the prior ones. In the beginning books though (e.g. numbers 1 - 4), they do collect clues that culminate in solving the "mystery" of the magic librarian's "Magic Tree House."

Amazon Price: $15.99 (as of 06/02/2012)Buy Now

Why is this the perfect family game? Because everyone in your family - even as young as 6 years old - and even those who are visiting you - will have a great time playing it! Beacuse it involves both luck and strategy, the kids have an equal chance of winning. In fact, since they have less on their mind than we do, they often DO win it!

RISK!!!!! (especially loved by age 11+ boys/men)

Risk is *almost* a bad word in our house because it brings out the very competitive nature in "some" of us. Thus, we LOVE it! If you haven't played RISK, try it. If you have pre-teen or teenage boys, they will LOVE it!

And, of course, like everything in the 21st Century, there's a version that'll speak specifically to your kids' interests.
